remember too...cursive was "invented" for writing with quill and ink...keep the tip on the page so you have to "dip" in ink less often...how many of us use quill and ink or EVER have. If you look at most adults quick note writing it is usually a mix of printing, caps and cursive....very individual. As for reading old documents like the constitution etc...

Transcript of the Constitution of the United States - Official Text

of course these documents are transcribed....I don't read the bible in the original Greek, Latin, Aramaic and Hebrew (or what have you) either...

Hi; SOOOO I have read ALL of the Posts to this Thread. My Curiousity is killing me here. Do ANY of you have a Solution to this problem or even some good ideas to resolve it?? I have a good, old school, education. My kid is getting a decent Education, I thought. Until I found out that she could not count money unless it was all facing in the same direction. Well, I was ticked so I began giving her tests EVERY DAY until she could count money. Now she can count money faster than a bank teller. I even went to the school and "blasted" the Principle and her Teacher. Problem solved.!!! I think that if We as parents actually take these matters into Our own hands instead of trying to get rid of the kids so We can go to work or relax for a bit then maybe We will all see a REAL change in Our kids Education and their futures.
I mostly agree with cudamarks Post that if the kid refuses to behave in school kick him out. If the kid flunks a Grade, then the kid REPEATS that Grade. If the kid fails a second time then EXPELL them. We could set up a separate System for Problem Kids to go to instead of wasting Our tax dollars on an Education System that does not work. Let the kids who WANT an education LEARN.!!! Let Us bag this Politically Correct crap and let the Teachers teach and let the kids who want to learn actually LEARN.!!! How many more good kids have to have their Educations and their Futures "DESTROYED" while We play the Politically Correct Blame Game ?? You can throw a Zillion dollars on Education but if the kid refuses to learn then what the hell good is it ?? That is just a plain waste of money. Let's smarten up Folks and return to the way Schools were in the old days where the Teacher WAS the Teacher and the kid was the STUDENT. !!! Let's use Our so called Modern Technology to assist Our TEACHERS instead of imposing a Zillion Rules on them rendering them afraid to even breathe the wrong way for fear of being sued or Arrested.!!! Let's end this crap once and for all by returning to those Values that We learned when We were in school called COMMON SENSE & LOGIC.!!! I'm done. What say ye Folks ?? I await. PEACE:RONB :coffee2: :leprechaun-hat:

...that is what private schools do, which is one reason they score higher than public schools. public schools are are open to all, and have very tight rules for how/when/how long/who you can expel or suspend. another thing to consider is that when folks are asked how THEIR public school is doing they tend to be favorable, but when asked how public schools as a whole are doing they tend to be negative.

I tend to take everything i read or watch or hear with a grain of salt...remember all those "news" outlets are trying to make a buck, usually off advertising...so the more you watch, respond, become outraged...the better their bottom line. I see CNN, Fox, and all the rest more as provocateurs than as reliable news sources.

Back in the day (my days in the 40s and 50s) the course was called 'penmanship'; writing in the cursive form.
And I was always amazed how left handed writers had to hold their ink pens in a manner so as not to smudge what they have just written.

watch how they do it....they turn their papers sideways or they twist their hand...gotta few lefties in my family, it is interesting to watch. I always figured Arabic must have been invented by a lefty as it is written "backwards".

Hi unclemac; Yup, that is why Our Public Schools are in such shambles. When I went to school, 60's - 70's NONE of this Politicaly Correct crap existed. Teachers taught and were TEACHERS and kids learned and were STUDENTS.!!! You acted up you got sent home and Mom or Dad, if not both, were waiting for you and they beat your ass when you got home. That was a LOOOONNNNGGG Walk for sure. Little Johnny didn't act up again I'll tell you. Me, I would LOVE to see it that way again. Maybe when We embrace these types of values America will become great again.!!! I await. PEACE:RONB

Yes, RONB, you almost baited me into starting to write more about 'old school' experiences-- and learning The Three R's; but that would digressing too far from the tread.

One day among our peoples there will be a need for cursive translators... and the Univer$ities will then churn them out.

Hi Don; I hear ya.!!! I seriously would love to see a return to Our old school Values applied to Our Public Schools today. Back then it did not matter if you went to either a Public or Private School. The values were about the same. If you were a good student you got good Grades and even Rewards. You were also given permission to do certain other Projects for the School and you were invited to more Parties etc... If you were a Trouble Maker then you were either Suspended or Expelled. If you had 3 Suspensions in one year you were EXPELLED. You were also shunned by those around you. If you truly had an Honest Learning Problem then you got help and were sent to a "SPECIAL" school to help you learn better. That way the kids who were doing good could continue to learn and you got the help you needed.
About Trouble Makers : First, after a few Offences they were Warned or Suspended depending on the trouble they caused. If the Offence was serious enough they were EXPELLED and the Police were called. A Report was made. If there were injuries they were sent to Juvenile Hall for a while. When they got out the Family was shunned Publicly to the point they had to move out of the area "quickly". We even had a "SPECIAL" school for Trouble Makers where they were given Tutors and Counseling.
Now if a Teacher screwed up they were Suspended without pay the FIRST time. They were FIRED for a Second Offence and Police were Notified pending any Criminal Charges. This set up made for a fairly efficient School System. Teachers were TEACHERS and kids were STUDENTS. Isn't that the whole dang point to begin with ?? :coffee2:

Me, I went to Public Schools all my Life and I even went to South Boston High School during the 1970's Forced Busing Edict Riots. I was in "every" Riot that occurred there. I had no choice. I lived one block from Southie High. I saw it all literally. BUUUTTTT Even during those Riots the Law & Order of the school remained intact. I graduated Southie High in 1976 while I was in the 11th Grade. I had more Points than ANY of the Seniors in the 12th Grade had. I won a Scholarship for College as well. I did this in spite of the Riots and Chaos that occurred there DAILY. I believe I was able to do this because of no prowess of my own but rather because of the Teachers and the Structure of the Schools System itself. I talk about myself not to say "Look at me." but rather to show that that System we had back then WORKED PERIOD.!!
I will be forever grateful that this type of Law & Order was maintained in spite of the difficulties imposed upon it. Today I say I am a better Man because of it. May God Bless All Those Teachers & Staff. You are still ALL alive in my fond Memories to this day. I loved you ALL.
PEACE:RONB :occasion14: :leprechaun-hat:
