looks like a badly cut or broken Mexican copper. Nice find should be a Reale or an Escudo near by.

looks like a badly cut or broken Mexican copper. Nice find should be a Reale or an Escudo near by.

From the size and spacing of the remaining lettering, looks like it's an 'Estado de Sonora' type. Depending on diameter, possibly a 'cuartilla' (quarter real), which would be 32mm. Similar to this one from 1861:

Yes, it could be an UNA QUANRTRTILLA DE REAL (Sonora State) from the period 1859 through 1862. The 1859 variety came in diameters of both 28 and 32 mm; later issues from this series were all 32 mm.

But did the smaller 28mm issue of 1859 have the same design? I thought that it didn't.
