Went back to the new site where I recently dug a bunch of early artifacts including a cut silver and a cob. Dan and I hit that little knoll again on Sun for about 90 min, and dug a few things but nothing exciting. Today I decided to wander around in the huge field on the other side of the property in an attempt to find another hotspot. Did a lot of walking and swinging, and very little digging, but eventually found a random IH penny followed shortly by a nice walking liberty half. Still couldn't find a house site in the vicinity of the 2 coins so started the trek back across the field toward the truck. Almost immediately I got a decent sounding signal and was totally surprised when a piece of cut silver popped out. But I decided to leave that area so my buddy Dan could come back with me at a later date, and ended up going back to the knoll again before calling it a day. I had previously been gridding that area, and picked up where I left off last time. I hadn't walked 10 ft when my first signal turned out to be another cut silver. I didn't immediately recognize the markings and still need to ID it. After not much success with the gridding I started to roam around a little further from the knoll. In the next hour I picked up 2 more cut pieces including half of a French Isle du Vent silver coin along with another cut pistareen. Couldn't believe I had found about the same amount of colonial silver as I had buttons, which is extremely unusual. Looks like we won't be giving up on this site anytime soon, but Dan and I may have to break away from this place to hit some other promising sites we got permission for last fall but have not yet had time to hunt. The season is getting short, but we still have a lot of digging to do.

Nice finds, pics, and post. That has turned into quite a site. Good luck this weekend, maybe this is the year you beat your Spanish silver record.

I'd carry that last photo around in my wallet, instead of my license.
Way prettier than my license.
Much, much, prettier.

Bill, your unidentified half coin is a 1731 Windward Islands silver 12 sols. Not sure if you can make any sense of my post above but I found the other half on the eastern side of the chesapeake. Surely its not the same coin but interesting nonetheless. If its the other coin you are trying to identify, well, that is a 1/4 cut of a 1707 - 1714 Spanish 2 reales of Chas III, pretender to the throne.

Thanks for the help GW. I already knew what the french coin was. A friend of mine dug one several years ago, and Dan just dug a similar one last month. It was the early cut silver that I didn't immediately recognize, and hadn't had time to look up before I posted. But thanks for doing that for me.

Great post and great finds. Keep them both coming!

Bill, your sites are extraordinary and full of the stuff dreams are made of. Cut silver still on the wish list.

Wow great finds on the cut silver and a standing libery too that's a great day... Congrats.:occasion14:

You sure are hot this winter, it helps to warm us up here in the frozen north.

Wow! Great hunt:thumbsup:

Bill, amazing as always - you said the luck was not with you on Sunday, look what just a couple of days and the same site can do!

Thanks Evan. I'm definitely having a good year in the colonial silver dept, but have a long ways to go to beat my old record. I can't exactly remember how many that was, but it was definitely somewhere in the 20s. And I'm only at 15 now. But anything is possible.
