Went back to the new site where I recently dug a bunch of early artifacts including a cut silver and a cob. Dan and I hit that little knoll again on Sun for about 90 min, and dug a few things but nothing exciting. Today I decided to wander around in the huge field on the other side of the property in an attempt to find another hotspot. Did a lot of walking and swinging, and very little digging, but eventually found a random IH penny followed shortly by a nice walking liberty half. Still couldn't find a house site in the vicinity of the 2 coins so started the trek back across the field toward the truck. Almost immediately I got a decent sounding signal and was totally surprised when a piece of cut silver popped out. But I decided to leave that area so my buddy Dan could come back with me at a later date, and ended up going back to the knoll again before calling it a day. I had previously been gridding that area, and picked up where I left off last time. I hadn't walked 10 ft when my first signal turned out to be another cut silver. I didn't immediately recognize the markings and still need to ID it. After not much success with the gridding I started to roam around a little further from the knoll. In the next hour I picked up 2 more cut pieces including half of a French Isle du Vent silver coin along with another cut pistareen. Couldn't believe I had found about the same amount of colonial silver as I had buttons, which is extremely unusual. Looks like we won't be giving up on this site anytime soon, but Dan and I may have to break away from this place to hit some other promising sites we got permission for last fall but have not yet had time to hunt. The season is getting short, but we still have a lot of digging to do.

Wow, what an awesome day!

INCREDIBLE Day, Bill! Interesting variety too in what you've been finding lately. I'm curious to know what the unidentified cut silver turns out to be.

Cheers,

Buckles

Quite an unusual day to find such a high percentage of cut silver coins versus other relics. I guess they had to use so much cut silver down there to make up for a shortage of copper coinage in colonial days. I guess that's why Great Britain finally came out with the Virginia Halfpenny in 1773? Anyway, stellar day Bill. You are certainly makeing the most of your retirement time.

WOW man that's unreal!!!! Your doing great this year, cant wait to see what else you and Dan can turn up!

Bill, your unidentified half coin is a 1731 Windward Islands silver 12 sols. Not sure if you can make any sense of my post above but I found the other half on the eastern side of the chesapeake. Surely its not the same coin but interesting nonetheless. If its the other coin you are trying to identify, well, that is a 1/4 cut of a 1707 - 1714 Spanish 2 reales of Chas III, pretender to the throne.
