Hey everyone - I was metal detecting in my front yard today when I found what I believe to be an Eagle Tounge Plate from the Civil War. I am pretty sure this is called a tounge and is from the Civil War, but I'm not positive so any help would be great. If anyone can ID this or give me any info on it I would appreciate it.

I have found heel plates and a sword scabbard in my yard before. I live in a very old area. My neighbor's house was built in 1695.

Thanks!

Hey Flintlock,

Good to see you again my friend. Your field experience in 1840's/1850's military sites is legendary. Where's that dandy cast star buckle tongue that you dug? I've only heard of maybe two or three others of that style, and they were found in 1850's sites as well, along with being in the same general compass direction from the East Coast, as yours.

P.S. Coincidentally, I just dug nearly all the parts and pieces to a flintlock rifle/musket...........Shall I be "Flintlock 2"? ;D

I'm glad to hear your out digging but this heat (I know you take precautions) can bite ya in the butt if your not careful. I've slacked off a bit, last camp I found (Infantry) was way back in March, good size camp. Here's the solid cast star buckle I dug while researching the route "Cheyenne Expedition of 1857"...it's interesting, a guy (Bill Hunt) contacted me and thought it might have originated from Florida but did not give any substantial documentation to back it up.

Flintlock,

Your rare 8-point cast brass tongue, is most likely not affiliated with Florida. I actually began my relic hunting in Florida, as a teenager. I primarily hunted sites that were active in the Second and Third Seminole Wars, which coincide with comparable finds with the exact same 1840's/1850's site that you are searching. Even though the 8-point design of the buckle closely matches the "Cherokee Rose" style star, of Florida's early adopted symbol, I believe that these buckles are unrelated to Florida. The other two examples of the very same tongue as you have, were found even further from Florida, than your example. ;D

Additionally, I have three complete and flawless, 8-point star stamped brass tongue & wreath buckles, that are personal finds. These were not found in the Everglades!

Note: A recent reading of this thread, caught an error, in that the stamped brass variety of tongue & wreath buckles mentioned above, are in fact with 6-points, not 8-points as earlier described.

I would certainly like to see the three complete 8-point star stamped brass tongue & wreath buckles along with some Historical reference if you wouldn't mind. Fascinating time period, need to grasp as much as I can.
Feel free to PM anytime!
