CW Sword Hanger??? or Bit piece? ***Updated 9/17/09***

[ModernMiner]

I dug this item at lunch today on my farm spot. It was within about 20' from where I dug my very first CW bullet & 1800's button.
Is this a CW sword hanger? If so, it's my first.
It appears to be a cast piece.
Thanks,
MM

I disagree....This could very well be a Sabre Belt attachment of some sort, some of the Richmond Arsenal 2-piece had attachment's like this, you never know Doug....same kinda cast marking's.Very Cool!!!!

I'm thinking it's CW related too. Just because I've found so many CW relics on the farm property, and up & down the road.

If you found it in the vicinity--I'd lean to that era also.

I believe it is also part of a sword belt hanger. Here is a link showing one. Scroll down to item number MS33.

The similarities are endless ...

Thanks Nick.
I can't believe the same section of the yard is still turning up finds. Today I just listened for any small signal and dug. Most were rusty square head nails, but I did find this piece and a tiny button with a neat design on it.

Fire pit pot hook?

Re: CW Sword Hanger ***MORE PICTURES*** Cast piece?

Over the years, so many possible sword hangers have been found and posted on many forums, including me, and most end up being something else. I am not sure on yours Doug, but I do not see any near exact matches on any of the sites. What is close to yours usually has the hook being higher than where the belt attachement loop would be, and yours is shorter.

For a definitive answer on what it is, I wish someone would have one for you. But if it is not one, then what is it.

Thanks Don.
I appreciate the input. I couldn't find an exact match either. I was hoping it was one possibly bent out of shape since I found it near my other CW relics.
Who knows?
It looks old anyways.

Older Than the Hills ...

Nick,
Do you think I dare give it to my wife as an earring for Christmas?

Re: CW Sword Hanger ***MORE PICTURES*** Cast piece?

I think it was used to hold a pot over a fire. I use one during camping trips. Yours was probably from a campsite.

A CW campsite I hope.
Thanks for the info.

Brass Sword Belt Hanger
Civil War brass sword hanger dug at Spotsylvania Court House (private property), Virginia. Price $35.00

http://www.civilwaroutpost.com/14.html?m7:cat=/Up Dated Relics:nonested

Found this site looking at different CW items. Great site to help ID and let you know what the prices are. I don't know how many bullets I shoot with the sling shot when I was a kid, but I wish I was back in Gettysburg. I do know where I shoot them and one day I will get back there. My Uncle lived just out side Gettysburg, a short walk to town. Use to find bullets on the ground. Great find.

Re: CW Sword Hanger ***MORE PICTURES*** Cast piece?

Sorry to drag up this old post again, but I just received the recent issue of NSCWT magazine and there was a section discussing bridles, bit bosses, and rosettes which included some great photos. This hanger item that I found above came to mind when I saw this picture.
Do you still think the item is a sword hanger or part of a bit?
Thanks,
MM

That's pretty close. Then again looks different.

Don't tell your wife what it is. She thinks it's an earring.

I spray painted it gold so she'll never know.
