Just something it was exposed to sometime in the last fifty years. An endless number of things can cause various toning to coins.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I FINALLY found 9 clad 1967-1968 half dollars in one roll today!! So excited I went to a coin shop to celebrate and purchased a 1917 half dollar and 1914 quarter!
