Date searching dimes?

Since I'm fairly new to this hobby and forum...how do most people search their dimes? Do most of you rim search everything, then check dates, or just rim search?

I currently check the rims then spread them out and check all the dates.

I'm sure there's probably a thread on this somewhere, but any helpful hints would be great.

Also dumping brinks dimes (while way easier to hunt) are a pain in the arse because the bank managers even came up and asked me a few times.....these aren't even opened.

I asked my personal bank if they would mind if I grabbed a box of quarters, searched it, replaced what was missing, bring it back to exchange for another box. they had no problem with that. So I take a box, search it, pull out a silver quarter, replace it come back a couple hours later ( I could have been back in 5 minutes later edge searching ) and the teller asked how I searched them if they were not opened. I dumped $10 into my hand and then rerolled it in the same plastic container right in front of her, she was amazed, she didnt know they were reuseable. I proceeded to go through 3 boxes of quarters that day like that, no questions asked. Got 2 Quarters out of the deal

I have been dumping them into bags as of late and saving the plastic rolls just in case I need them to reroll with later on. Been throwing them into labeled boxes.

I don't know why the canadian searchers don't use magnets? It would seem the quickest way to check...

It only seems to be I started doing this one time, and almost missed KG VI silver dime. It was stuck to a magnet in between a nickel and steel dimes. That is why I don't use magnets for silver finding. For me the easiest way to look through the whole roll and the colour of silver is very distinct, comparing to nickel and steel colour. Silver tends to have white-grayish/greenish colour.

I go fast though and now see the big difference between silver, nickel and steel colours.

Like you, I have to search the rolls..... But silver has a decidedly different colour than nickel... SO I spread them out, look for the silver colour and then pluck them out.... not that I get a lot... but enough to keep the interest active

Sometimes I do that, but still prefer to hold them in hand. I did CRH of dimes for so long, I can even feel the silver with my fingers.
No kidding. I've noticed that when holding silver and nickel dime in hand, the silver one tends to get warmer first.
One advantage of Canadian cold and harsh climate

All very true but as others have said my method of choice is a magnet. As mentioned above I also spread them all out, so one is not lying on top of another and then I swipe the magnet over them. I have never had a problem with a silver being caught between two magnetics because I spread out the coins and yes, very often I either see the distinct silver colour or hear the sound first.
So again I magnet search and if I go fast, I can have $500 (2 boxes) searched and re-rolled in about an hour.

Anyone who lives within a few states of Ohio should date check for 1982 no p dimes... That's where they were first discovered. I don't check for them here cuz it's just too far west.

quick rim check for dimes and halves . quarters too unless looking for mint errors. i made $ 180 on a roll of state quarters that were double. the coin machines are great ..they don't take silver and spit them back out. when u go through thousands a week ...it can make you go crazy.

Our crew of three typically has about 1 hour to search $1000 of dimes.

Impossible to date search (except for dirty rims).

I laugh at the CRHers who write that with their technique they don't miss any silver. If the miss it, how would you ever know!!

I have no regrets for silver I might have missed.

I only regret not having time to search as much coin as I would like.

I sound test everything. It's much faster to pour the coins into my hand or bag and listen for that distinctive sound. You would be surprised how many silvers are not spotted by edge check alone.

Sound check I believe you'll miss out more silver by sound checking Dime vs Rim Checking, but do what you think is best.
