I was in my backyard trying out a new Explorer II and received a banging silver signal at 8 inches. When I first uncovered it, I thought it was a wad of silver foil, then I saw an eye, a nose and a mouth. It became obvious this quarter met a lawnmower blade at it's demise. The date is inside one of the bends. I may try to open it up just to see what the date is.

Strangely enough, I suffered a lawnmower accident at a young age that damaged my left foot pretty badly. I think I'll flatten this quarter out and keep it as a good luck charm. I figure we both used up our good luck when we experienced the wrath of a speedy blade.

After a number of surgeries it's fine. Just don't look at it - like the quarter.

Love looking at the quarter! I'm real glad about the promotion, I hope it doesn't involve more time at the work place, would hate to see you missing out on the hunt. Going home to put my lawn mower out of it's misery!

There is an "S" mint mark on the reverse, so it is definately silver.

Thanks to lordmarcovan for the help - "Mintmarks were on the reverse until 1964, when the last silver quarters were made for circulation. In 1965-67 US coins were clad, and struck without mintmarks. In 1968, mintmarks were resumed, but they moved the mintmark location to the obverse."

Still working on flattening to get the year.
