So is the Deleon really just a Silver uMax with a screen and added threshold control?
Is there something I'm missing?
I mean the target ID and target depth on the screen means a lot and IS worth some value but otherwise, are they the same detector?
deathhare,

The Deleon is actually a Cortes (same detection circuitry) without as many features and controls. The Deleon is NOT a Silver uMax with added controls and features. The Silver is a fine detector and does a great job for the money it costs. If you have any other thoughts on Tesoro detectors please let me know. Joe

Ok oh great.
So how is it better than the Silver uMax. They both seem to work on about the same khz right?
Does the DeLeon go deeper or?

deathhare,

Well, to answer your question, the Deleon has a whole lot more features (better?) than the Silver. They both operate at 10 kHz, but the Deleon gets a couple more inches of depth (depending on various conditions),has a 9"X8" coil, digital target ID (two digit number and five segment bar graph),coin depth indicator, and threshold control. A detector is only "better" if the operator uses and prefers the features that it has. That's why manufacturers give you a choice of different models at different prices. Most pros have a stable of detectors that have various features and they use what's appropriate for the kind of hunting they are doing. Joe

SHERMANVILLE ILLINOIS,

Thank you! Nice of you to say that. Joe

Thanks for the replies.
Why does the DeLeon go deeper. Is it just because of the larger coil?

deathare,

The larger coil does contribute to a small amount of depth gain, but the lions share of the increased depth comes from the different circuitry. Joe

Hey thanks a lot for your comment.

I guess if the DeLeon were the same detector with an added VDI Id be ok with that. I mean it does give you an idea of depth and target metal. If it goes deeper, and i guess it should with the bigger coil, that would be great too.

Maybe I should just get a larger coil for my Silver uMax? Sometimes in trashy areas I wish I knew it wasnt silver or copper to avoid digging a large piece of iron.

Mr. Peabody, I agree with Your Sentiments about coil size and different circuits! Bill

Larger pieces of iron can, and do fool many machines. That's why they say the operator is the most important piece of the equation. Is the target too big to be a coin, or your desired target ? Is there any halo ? Also a piece of iron doesn't have to be that big to fool a detector if it is ring shaped, like a chain link
for example.

No matter the detector shape and orientation have alot to do with signal. We will never get away without digging some junk. Most will agree to dig only if you get a good signal in two directions. While this is mostly true the other day I dug when I got a good signal in east to west, but almost none in north to south the target turned out to be a silver dime on edge. There's a moral in there somewhere. Something like this; sometimes a good signal turns out to be trash, and sometimes a trashy signal turns out to be something good.

Back on track. The Deleon is alot more machine than silver no question. I think it is pretty accurate with ID too, if it tells me zinc, 99% of the time it will be a zinc penny. I'm getting to the point that I will pass on many of these now, especially if it is later in the day.

Rick I have been told that an Indian head cent will ring in as zinc. I have not been able to prove or disprove this but just wanted to pass that on:)
