Detecting in the greater Melbourne, Florida area

Can anyone tell me what detecting in the Melbourne area is like? Do detectorists swarm the area like army ants? Is there a decent amount found there? Are some local beaches better than others to hunt? Is it easy/hard to find parking near the beaches, say, on the weekends?

For where I'm at (Clearwater), it's like a giant, magic vacuum cleaner has sucked up all the valuables from the sand and water. True, there are a ton of detectorists who search the area, but there's also a ton of beachgoers visiting every day, so the lack of things to find is a mystery.

For example, I get about one *signal* an hour if in the water, and my last several trips out, I only got about 4 or 5 total signals after several hours while gridding the wet sand; not even any junk jewelry found. Parking is also extremely challenging to find on the weekends, unless you get there really early or really late. I'm hoping that Melbourne at least has a decent amount of fake jewelry to dig up, and maybe even some real gold or silver.

The Atlantic beaches are much rougher and colder than Gulf Coast. 2-3 ft surf is normal, 3-4+ ft is not unusual at all.

If you are going to be in the area for awhile you might drive just a little south and try Bonsteel park beach. Not areal busy place, but I understand some 1715 coins and artifacts have been recovered there. Good luck.

Torrero is correct, hunters on all beaches, but most of the east coast beaches are much longer and flater so much more area to hunt.

I worked the Melbourne beach area (dry sand) several yrs and I think the hunting is worse than Clearwater that I've been hunting now for the past 11 yrs! But 1 thing really nice about the Melbourne beach area is there can be 4-6 ft of sand that disappears in a night due to tides and constant wave action (which also makes it a challende to hunt the water). However, if you can time your MD visit right during a spring tide the gold is there.

I live in Indialantic, basically Melbourne Beach. I am not a detector but spend time on the beach taking photos. They have been "renourishing" the beaches constantly so lots of new sand is always covering everything thing up. They do stop during turtle nesting season. It isn't the classic tourist beach like you have, and the locals don't wear bling. I seldom see detectorists so either it sucks or no one is looking and you may find a lot. I have s friend who walks the beach every morning. She has found 2 silver Spanish coins presumably from the 1715 wrecks.

Any beach is worth detecting if you have the opportunity. Just last week I was in Key Largo and Fort Pierce, did I kill it? No but I found some very nice things and I will detect those beaches when I get a chance to get back. Quit over thinking it, go swing your coil and see what you might find!
