Detecting question

Hey T-Net, I recently purchased myself an Ace 250 to get myself accustomed to detecting. I have one quetion about detecting locations. I understand that if you want to detect on someones land that you are going to have to aquire permission, but what about local parks and playgrounds. I see loads of people on here going to places like schools and playgrounds. What do you tell someone of they approach you about detecting in one of these areas? Thanks for the help !

If there is a main office or maintenance office I always ask first. That includes all schools and some town or city parks. So far I have not been turned down - though I have been told to stay away from certain areas or keep out during certain times. Leads me to believe if I had just started digging in the wrong area I'd have been booted out post haste.

At small public parks with no caretaker I usually just risk it. If i show up and there is a crew present I ask.

Hey thanks for the responses they really were a help to me! I can t wait to get out the and hunt, it would be test week at school so I am confined to my house to study for a while!

I have never been harassed at a park for detecting. I have had plenty of homeless come up to me when I was detecting someones yard or construction sites. Most sane people will understand that you yourself are insane for wanting to dig in the earth for pennies.

I also keep my head down and don't make eye contact with anyone if at all possible. I make them yell if they want my attention.

You don't need to ask for public parks and schools, if it's not specifically disallowed, to begin with. In much the same way that you wouldn't "ask" to fly a frisbee, etc... If you have any doubts, park rules usually available on city hall websites. If it's silent on the issue ...... then so be it
