Not sure if I consider this half success or a failure.
Chance, my metal detecting dog has been training to find gold and silver.
He is very successful at only trigger at the gold and silver targets that I have located in the ground. And he does ignore the targets that are not gold or silver that I have buried.

I took him to the far end of our local park and he triggered on eight objects that had been in the ground for a considerable amount of time.

Sadly, none of them gold or silver. But all metal objects buried from about 3 to 8 inches deep.

Is this
Half Success?
or just plain failure?
Your thoughts please

I'm torn, he is metal detecting, just not the items I want or hoping for.
He is triggering on heavily rusted metals and brass, which is zinc and copper.
Zinc seems to give him a challenge to ignore.

Animals (even the easily trainable) have variable success in this kind of thing.
It may be that you have trained your dog to prioritise gold and silver over other metals, but it will find other metals if there is no gold/silver around.

you may be correct.
His priority is to get a treat.
He has no concept that gold and silver is more important than brass.
"If I sit a point my nose towards the metal, I get a treat."
Fortunately, he avoids aluminum.

What type of dog is it?
Labrador Retriever.

The ATF, use them exclusively for non-aggressive scent detection.
To detect crime scenes and look for explosives or fire accelerants.
Easily trainable, friendly and not aggressive.

Maybe placing a signal in his collar.
When humans come on contact with Frequencies our. Solar plexus feeling will indicate a frequency connection.
Its possible a dog can sense a connection line direction..

I think the reason people can't lose Dogs, is because the Dogs are following a scent frequency.. They have something to follow..
Placing Gold or and Silver in their collar, will create any frequency connection lines connected to the collar..
The Dog now has something to follow..

interesting conception.
it is certainly worth a try.

I'm going to try it now.

yes, Chance does great at preplaced Gold and Silver.
Even in compacted dirt.

Be we haven't found anything that was lost yet.

He is good at it.
But these are preplaced objects.
I am hoping he finds something just naturally.

He's just smelling metal objects to me. Most buried objects have a smell about them, especially rusted ones. Most of those you show I reckon would have a pretty strong smell to a human let alone a dog. Its smelling the scent leaching into the surrounding ground.
Often if I find what might be a hotrock containing gold will smell it. Its a dead giveaway that actual iron steel smell.
Its a success finding metal but can't help feel that's probably as good as it will get. Interesting experiment though.
