Deus 2. whats up with the goofy a$$ antenna if you go in the water?

was thinking about getting a deus 2 for diving, then saw you need a goofy antena? wth. how does this work, why you need one? what is this 1982? gotta rig my water machine like when i used to tie a rock to my coil so it would submerge lol. i want one but can someone tell me what the anetena is all about? to me its an instant deal killer

I presume it's because there are no wires, and the coil needs a stronger signal to talk to the control box. So, there's an antenna.

But I agree it seems a bit awkward.

The wireless signals from control to coil won't travel far under water. You need the antenna to connect the signal from one to the other. Taking it on and off (you have to do that to charge the coil) can be a pain. It adds drag to swinging under water too. Just one of many reasons I sold mine.

Wireless headphones on land are great. Just doesn't work in the water. XP just needs to have an actual waterproof cable option instead of the antenna. A better control pod mount is needed too. I don't know how many time I knocked that stupid thing off!

Could be he hunts rougher waters? My buddy Scott just messaged me, said he had to check when he bought his Nox 900 for his last trip to OC Md (this past weekend)..... he had cracked the rod (?) and needed to send it in if still under warranty. Not seen it yet but OC waters can be deadly somedays.

Here's what happens when the Fisher AQ meets Atlantic rough waters... These new machines are amazing when it comes to weight but can only take so much pounding. Great machines but nothing surprises me when it comes to what can happen when detector meets water.

Reasonably so, but, they have some issues too. The factory knobs were a POS. The battery pods (especially the alkaline one) have crack problems, and the cable sheaths for both headphones and coils were poor quality for many years.

Speaking of super tuff, I was shocked when I started hearing about lots of guys that were having problems with the ears of their newer Minelab coils breaking. I never had that issue or even heard about that with my Sovereign's. I checked out a lot of videos on YouTube covering how to fix broken coil ears, how to reinforce coil ears so they don't break, etc. Then when I got my X-Terra Elite, I saw why lots of guys were having breaking coil ears. The ears on my X-Terra coils are so thin, maybe a 1/16th or 1/8th inch wide, but kinda wimpy looking.

I've been swinging my Minelab Sovereign Elite for the last 14 years, never had any problems with coil ears, never heard of anyone having those issues with the older Minelab's. My Sov is built like a tank; just take a look at the 8" Tornado coil pic I've attached. This coil isn't mine, just grabbed it from the net. I have a 10" Tornado but take a look at the ears on the original coils that Minelab used to make. They're REALLY thick, probably at least 1/4" wide. Don't know why Minelab would have went with such thin, wimpy coil ears, when they could have just kept the ear design they've been using with the old coils, and they probably wouldn't be having this issue.

The broken ear problem pretty much started with the larger Equinox coils. The latest ones have been improved, and I haven't heard of any problems with the Manticore coils. (different design). Not sure about the Xterra and Elite stuff as I don't have those. I've never broke a coil before the Nox, or since.
