Hello. I am not use to hunting civil war bullets but will have an opportunity to do so very soon. I bought a 3 ringer bullet to see how my Deus reacts to it. I was surprised - my Dues doesn't like it. The signal is very unstable and choppy instead of being a nice constant digable tone. I have tried different factory programs as well as customizing. I am using v4.1 with the LF 10" coil. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I would love to find a 3 ringer when i go on this hunt. =)

I don't know but just curious if the VDI number is right at one of the tone breaks?

What program and settings are you using? I have no issues with Deus fast at any frequency with tracking ground balancing. I have dug them 9-10" deep. Silly me I don't keep a ruler on hand in the field!

Also check to make sure the silencer is off (-1) as that can cause choppy dignals. Using the gold field program can cause that also. Giving us your settings or a specific program used will help a lot.

are you air testing or on/in the ground?

I hunt in FULL TONE. I ususally hunt in 8 or 12 kHz. I modify the Deep program v4.1. Reactivity - 2 to 3; Silencer -1; Discrimination - 0; TX Max - 3; Sensitivity - 90 to 92; Audio response - 4; Overload - 1; Iron volume - 3 Did I miss any? Sorry, i am at work =)

I did both air testing and buried it in the ground. Very distorted signal response with a bad scratchy iron buz mixed in with the beep. Sounds horrible like a badly rusted piece of non-ferrous metal.

Strange. Maybe it's some unknown "counterfeit" alloy? LOL

Try fast with the same settings and see how it does. If you are swinging over mineralized soil, that might cause the iron buzz. If the bar graph on the right side of the screen is more than half scale, your soil is highly mineralized. If that is the case, then you should lower TX power to 2 or 1 (if the mineralization is severe). Also, you are basically maxed out on settings and set up for deep targets. Try lowering sensitivity to ensure you are not overloading the coil with all that lead. I have personally abandoned full tones/no disc for relic hunting. Using disc between 6 and 10 with iron volume and 3, 4, or 5 tones or pitch provides nice smooth tones and the disc prevents iron target or mineralized soil down averaging of non ferrous targets. No depth impact with that disc setup either contrary to some of the misinformation floating around out there.

You sir, are the Special Forces of Deus users. I greatly appreciate all your advice. You and Gary have taught me more about my detector than anyone. I live in North Carolina and hunt in orange soil. Would a specific ground balancing method benefit me in the orange soil? the ground often reads between 70's and 90.

Just match your GB to the measured number +/-3 and you should be fine.

Bullets.
Tone wise they won’t generally sound as pure sounding vs coins.
Corrosion on bullets can cause off beat sound tone wise.
Orientation of bullet can affect town too.

You can get a wonky sound too on bullet depending on your tone break settings. Someone mentioned this above.

If you haven’t done so already just wait till you hit a round bullet/ball.. These can sound awfully close to iron. Fool a person.
