I managed a short outing today at the beach... garnered a quarter, penny, beach glass etc...but am mostly curious about this black slaggish rock...not heavy...that gave a nice clear signal...what is it?

Thanks in advance,

:)
It looks a little bit like a worn/tumbled piece of coal… Dark or black rocks like hematite, magnetite and coal, as well as objects from outside our atmosphere—aka—meteorites will all set off a metal detector. Slag will also set it off…so there is that too!😵‍💫
It’s hard for me to say exactly what it is, as I’m more of a hands on person and my eyes could be better, but best of luck figuring out that “hot rock”. Someone with more knowledge will pop up sooner than later!👍🏼

Thanks 👍. It does have a melted look to it....maybe an ancient meteorite 😯

Looks like black slag from an old smelter. Look up the history of your area and you can see they had many smelters at one time.
