Found this today at a house that was built in the 1860s. Rang up a little lower than a copper penny and about 4in deep. When I saw that this little thing was making so much racket I was confused, but I was real confused when I saw the obverse head. Does anyone have an ID on this? I imagine that someone had this as a piece of jewelry due to the blob of what I think is adhesive on the reverse? This coin was part of my greatest hunt ever but I'll post that in a bit when I get some pictures

For sure a cool find. Think it could have been used as a button and the shank broke off? I found little plain flat buttons around that size before. I don't know what it is but hopefully you'll get some answers on here![emoji2]

Is it a button or cufflink made to imitate a later Roman coin?

Whatever the case, I lost an ancient Greek coin in 1st grade while at St Jerome's school in Hyattsville, MD so I'd bet strange finds like that turn up over here occasionally.

I'd guess you have a flat button, made with the look of a coin... I found something similar a few years back.

folks have "collected" roman coins for a long time * even in colonial times --rich folks collected "roman coins" as a means of showing that they were rich enough that they could afford to spend money and basically "waste some" by buying old "no longer legal tender" roman coins

Indeed as ivan said, I've had them show up at my colonial heaven.

I definitely think it was a piece of jewelry or a button. I don't think it's a copy though. It looks like the edges were clipped to fit whatever it fit in. Looks very similar to the coins posted above

And as well folks,,

A LOT of us here have the belief,,and a select few,,have the KNOWLEDGE that good ole Christopher Columbus (not even his real name) was not the first here.
He NEVER made it to the continent,,never set one foot on the place that is now America.
But there are MANY ancient wanderers who did,, and those wanderers had laid a claim long before Spain or England.
So it perfectly stands that those ancient coins were not all "drops" or lost as time passed.

Agreed, coin like button. I've seen a few but they tend to be Nero.

Looks like a button or from jewelry here is a pic of a Roman coin I have for comparison notice the shadow, 100_4313.JPG 100_4314.JPG showing how much thicker than the dime also the ragged edges because it was hammered not pressed or stamped.

Yeah the coin is pretty thick compared to the penny. I'll try and post better pics tonight

Neat find! Maybe it was cut to fit into a ring? Congrats! Hey it's the real deal until you find out otherwise!
Even your Lincoln seems to have an odd oval on the shoulder, or maybe it's my I pad.
