Living near Danville, VA when I was 12, had on a brand spanking new unwashed yet, pair of heavy jeans. Got hit by a copperhead on the knee before I even saw it. Those jeans saved me, only a small little more than a scratch with one fang. the whole knee area of the jeans was soaked kinda yellow, and turned hard crusty. My folks took me to the hospital, got a shot and sat in the waiting room for a couple hours - no problems, and sent home.

I was incredibly lucky, and I do watch for snakes with every single step, always have ever since.

In the local paper here there was a lady mowing her lawn hit by a copperhead - she spent over a week in the hospital.

One thing about North Idaho, we have no poisonous snakes. We just have to look out for the wolves, grizzly bears, mt lions, and moose.

I have not seen one of those in years thankfully, the last time I did see one I had stepped on it!!! But I got lucky and did not get bit.

About 3 hours ago I had about 40 minutes at my bottle dump site #2 and moved a fallen limb booyah don't know what kind of snake but it was alive so after the first girly scream I think I scared the snake half to death.......ummm not that I was scared but yeah it wasent my toughest moment LOL be careful what you move and how you move it ya never know when or where THAT KING COBRA IS AT( 2 THINGS THAT SCARE ME TO MY BONES SNAKES AND ZOMBIES) KEEP DIGGIN CAREFULLY AND KEEP POSTING

Did it ring up in the 80's? That's what mine usually show up in. Just before they take a bite out of your leg. :dontknow:

No . . . but my landspeed rang in at about 35 when I was hoofin' it the other way. Scary dude, but I'll take our CHs and you keep your Cottonmouths and rattlers. Yeah. For sure.

I ran face to face with a big rattler while cutting firewood. It struck the chainsaw on the bottom and scared me horribly. Fortunately the smell of fresh human manure paralyzes them and I got out of range!

They do have a distinct ring tone that will get your attention. LOL

Since so many have commented on this thread, I thought I'd show you one that DIDN'T make it from earlier this spring. This guy turned out to TIE the Virginia state record at 48". I didn't know that and discarded him. I guess he should have been officially documented somewhere. The World record is 52", caught in Texas.

The way I see it is if I am outside, I am in their turf. I do my best to respect all of God's creatures and hate killing anything unless I am going to eat it. If I find snakes in the yard I catch them and let them go out in the woods. The only ones I refuse to handle are rattlers. I will do my best to drape them over a VERY long stick, but I won't lie....my knees will be shaking like crazy the entire time!
Snakes are absolutely facinating and copperheads are one of the most gorgeous ones out there. Keep an eye out when you are in their territory, give them a wide berth and the respect they deserve and everyone will live happily ever after!
To each there own, but I just see no reason to kill a snake just because its a snake. Although I understand why people do it if it is in their yard and they have children and pets, but out in the woods or away from people I say leave 'em be.

I hear you Keilasdad. The 48 incher above was killed by a car (as you can probably tell in the photo). The rifle is there for perspective. I have killed quite a few in my yard, I will admit. I raised three little girls, and one struck my Chesapeake Bay Retreiver in the throat one time (She was protecting us - I was walking in my garden at night, and the dog attacked before I even saw it). The dog almost strangled from the swelling. She made a full recovery, but her neck skin never regained elasticity! She had an excessive "waddle" (Like a turkey) the rest of her life!

Yes, seen all of those and now their are wolves....

I'm glad I don't have to worry about those up here in the NE, all we have to worry about are bears, moose, wild cats and the absolute worst menace there is............. SKUNKS.

Have fun but play safe,
ZDD

Agreed - gorgeous! That's why I'm fascinated by them. The pic isn't clear, but he had turned to face me down (Head up and ready, to the right). We faced off . . . I backed down. I only kill if they're in my yard . . .

Yep... I only kill them when there're in my yard also (daylight). I live in a rural Middle TN. area. In fact an "old timer" told me my ridge I own is/was called "Copperhead Ridge" about 20 years ago. And I know WHY!!!! Every dog we've owned has been bitten at least once (only the smart ones). We rescue dogs and now have 7. Had family down last week from MI. We have a large hollow oak tree in front yard. Son in law goes out with flashlight into front yard. Runs back into house yelling "There's 4 COOPERHEADS IN FRONT YARD". This hollow tree houses many mice and critters. So I say.... soooooooooo. Everybody goes nuts!!!!!!! So I go out and 4 shots later we have 4 dead copperheads. I told him we could do this all night LONG. Next night another one... and the next day another!!!! There not a "bad critter".... They wanna live as bad as the rest of us. And they will not bother you if you don't bother them.... Oh, and the dogs get over it much better than WE would. 1 day later and there fine... never lost one yet due to a copperhead bite. Please leave them alone!!!!!!!!!!

A local 8 foot rattler

snake.webpThis one was done the road from my house it is an 8 foot Rattler.

We have copperheads here in MD and I wear Rocky knee high snake boots mainly to protect my legs from the brush and briars I walk through and I get teased by others in our club for wearing them but Id rather be safe than sorry and I have been bitten once luckily by an 8 foot upset black snake.
Talk about tough though--my 80 year old great aunt went to her garden(Kentucky mountains) and was picking strawberries for a cake for us and she took a big glass bowl to put them in, like a fish bowl size. She was down on her knees picking and as she would put a berry in the bowl she would hear what sounded like a bell, she did this over and over and the sound rang out each time. My aunt stood up to see an 18 button timber rattler coiled up and every time she would put her hand in the bowl to drop a berry the snake would strike at her hand and hit the bowl making a ringing sound. Did my aunt run screaming like most, pfft no she went to the house and got a hoe, came back and lopped off that snakes head and brought it back to the house to show us how big it was. Dang thing was as big around as a man's arm and had to be 5 feet or more. I don't mind snakes and I give them the respect they deserve, if in my yard I take them including copperheads and move them off somewhere, no sense in killing them just because I don't like them or they aren't cuddly like a cat.

I like your Copperheads better. Yours go away from you. Here they come towards you.

Somebody get the weedwhacker..:laughing7:

Ive only seen one copperhead this yr and it was in the road as I ran it over I saw it in my rear view mirror. I hate snakes and lucky enough not to find any in the wild yet this yr while doing hunts.

I must live in the center of the Copperhead Headquarters here in Middle Tennessee. They are everywhere around here. I don't bother them unless there're in the yard with the dogs going nuts, or the wife finds them in the shrubs or family and kids come SCREAMING to me. Here's my front yard tally for summer of 2013.

Copperhead (0) vs .22 (5)
Copperhead (0) vs. Lawnmower (2)
Copperhead (0) vs. Weedtrimmer (1)

Thats why I don't hunt the woods around here 'till it gets cold!
