What's better than a couple of dozen dropped gardner 2-ringers? When they're still in the cartridge box! We hit the battlefield and were doing OK. I found a piece of 12# ball, the nose and tail-piece of a Schenkl, and part of a 20# Parrot, along with a couple of .69s, a few 3-ringers and some round balls and percussion caps.

Digging buddy found similar stuff:

But then he got a really, really strong signal on his 70s era 6-button Nautilus. It was an intact, perfect Cartridge box. he chipped off a corner digging it, and Gardners fell out. HELLO!

Everything was there, covered in leather, down to the two iron buckles and the brass finial.

We worked for a long time to try and remove it intact. The plan was to lift out several inches of the hardpan clay below it, and let that act as a "shelf". It immediately broke. We wrapped it tightly in a shirt and placed it in a cooler and carried it out. When we got it home, the dirt had fallen off along with every scrap of leather which was the consistency of cotton candy.

The good news was that the tin stayed almost intact. The leather around the finial stayed together. Here's the bizarre thing - There was not ONE SINGLE BULLET missing!! This sucker was packed to the brim. It was lost 100% full. These pictures are poor, but you can see the bullets nesting inside if you know what you're looking at. Such a shame to not be able to preserve it, but it was LONG gone. Nothing could have held it together. Cleaned up, it will still look good as a display piece, I think.

Banner find in my opinion. Not sure how that works if you are posting for someone else. Unique find regardless.

great finds congrats

Sounds like you all were hunting a site from the first half the war. Nice score!

very cool find

good night. that is a spectacular find! a hearty congratulations to you.

GJ - Why would you say that? I am intrigued by your hypothesis! This site saw action both early and late in the war. What do you know that I don't know?! Oh, and Diggervet - that's something, coming from YOU. I recall some nice stuff in your posts as well. Anyway . . . I didn't find this. But thanks for the kind words! Lastly . . . Dug - thanks. This guy is old school, no fancy-shmancy computers for him! But nice of you to say.

What a great day you two had!!!!!. Nice digs then the cartridge box ...wow

Wow! A complete CONFEDERATE cartridge box? :notworthy: Bet there haven't been many of those found since the 60s or 70s. I applaud the attempt to keep it intact, sorry to see it fell apart. Had it remained intact I'd definitely say that was a banner find... as it is I'm still thinking it might deserve to be there!

What a great piece of CW history there. Congrats to both of you guys.

I must say I really do love almost everything about this site. There is one thing however that does rub me the wrong way. Jealous people who rather then say nothing have to make snide comments about a great find. Sometimes because they don't believe a person actually found items they post and sometimes because they're just plain jealous they didn't find it themselves. There is no way you can be certain someone isn't posting for attention or if they actually found the items they post. So just congratulate them and wish them continued success.

This CW cartridge box is a spectacular find and I hope the powers that be on TN will award it the banner find it deserves even if the poster is just listing it for a buddy. He was there and was part of the recovery. One day I hope to be able to hunt an area where I might possibly find a CW bullet. I can't imagine finding a whole box of unfired ones. I know if I did I would be glad I had on my depends that day for sure.

Congratulations on an incredible recovery and find.

Sorry for being long winded.

Awesome find your buddy made. I am glad he got it whole. I dug a union one like that several years back and unfortunately was digging in the heat of a horrible drought (hard ground) and was unable to remove it intact...I had lots of tin and black gunpowder dirt and bullets.

Killer, simply killer

Great job!!! I have found where it appeared one had been emptied but not the box itself. That is about as sweet as it could get. Congrats...d2

I can't seem to find it, but where is there a snide comment in this thread that's got you worked up? Was it removed? :icon_scratch:

Nice hunt guys! That had to be thrill finding that cartridge box full of Gardners. Too bad the CS Cartridge boxes didn't have some kind of CS plate like the Union ones did!

Wow now that is some cool stuff.. I see something you found and I found one to you know what it is??

Nautilus detectors rock. I still have my "Seventies era" MF Nautilus detector. Found my best stuff with it.

Very historic and meaningful find. Congrats to your friend.
