Digging Large Signals

I have been ignoring a lot of signals lately that seem to be large objects(cans etc...) got a solid nickel sound today. Raised the coil about a foot and still sounded.....started not to dig....it was a 1919 Buffalo nickel on top of the ground just covered with sand....Do you guys and gals dig those kind of signals?

]Using the Excaliber2, When you pass over ferrous metal, the thresh hold will "blank" (go quite) when the sound returns, it will be at a higher volume.

Yes I do. And like you I expect a large junk item. But, every now and then there is a surprise. I had a 1700's coin hit like that. A real strong, high conductive signal. Turned out to be less than 2 inches deep! Like Gomer Pyle says: "surprise, surprise, surprise!".

Ok, I understand. Thanks for the explanation. I usually hunt in a quiet mode rather than what my detector refers to as "all metal mode". So I usually don't see that type of response on my detector.

I have been having an issue with the AT Pro where it will hit on Penny/Dime on aluminum cans. My remedy is to try pinpointing and when I get a large area I don't dig.

Raise you coil a foot or so above the ground and swing. If your still hitting the target its likely a can. Coins will fade out when you raise the coil. Unless your using a F75 LTD in boost mode of course! lol

I got a wide pinpoint with my AT pro, and it was two gold rings ten inches apart. The only reason I dug it was because one end of the target read 53 and the other end read 64. When I first started detecting with an ACE 250 I was leaving all big targets looking for coins. I found out later that a lot of the targets were coins with iron next to them.

Short story....I got one of those large silver sounding signals one day. I was tired, I almost said, "forget it" I dug the signal, and it turned out to be 2 CW US Cartridge box plates side by side.
It's hard to neglect them these days.

Well if you don't use a minelab you don't get nulls..........

Ditto. Too many times I've dug pocket spills or a couple coins side by side to NOT dig a hard hitting signal.

With my vision however, I no longer dig zinc.

I dig every signal even when I think it's a can. 90+% of the time it is a can but that other 10% has paid off in some great finds. Just dig it!!!

My buddy swong his etrac over a $250 sack of dimes and it read solid "dime". Thought it would of overload but it didn't.

Until you get to know your detector and what it's trying to tell you, did everything. I once found a stromberg-carlson 1901 wooden cased phone at six inches on a iffy large signal. Most often than not it's a beer can or railroad spike or something like that. Good hunting.
