What brand and model? Disc refers to one of the modes, discrimination where the detector can be adjusted to not sound off on iron objects, foil, and upwards. Tone might refer to the sound it makes, but I am guessing here.

It sounds like the Bounty Hunter I have, and used to use... it has a toggle switch that allows you to choose between Disc., All Metal, and Tone. Tone mode differs from Discrimination (in the BH machine I have anyway) in that it assigns a tone (BOOP) to objects aluminum and below, and a higher-pitched tone (BEEP) to objects in the coin-range of metals (copper, brass, silver, etc..). Nickels and gold fall under the aluminum range, and are, therefore, much more tedious to find...
