I've been trying to find a handful of colonial sites along the river in a bunch of my fields. In your experience how far were most colonial homes from the river? I know rivers change all the time but I'm just trying to get an idea. The field closest to the river I think is a lost cause because it's nothing but dirt. No rocks and very little signals I'm guessing flooding buried anything that may have been there.

Thanks!

The smart colonial builders made sure they were above the flood plain. Therefore, they liked hills that ensured even hurricane floods in river would not be a problem. I would say 200 feet in many cases. They built to last and these are stone structures I'm talking about.
Start at 100 feet at a minimum.

I would say a lot had to do with flooding. If the terrain went up quickly from the river, the closer the house. If it went up slowly, they would worry about getting flooded.
