Firstly Cru'dad yesterday had a couple of hours solo hunting in a failed oil-seed rape area & managed 2 Roman Nails, 1 scrappy & a knife thingy.

It pays to keep an eye on whats going on around your farms. Land-mag pointed out something I already knew, which was that one of our good farms has had some brush/tree clearance with some ditches being re-profiled.
It was only 1 ditch we were interested in, the one between a wooded area where we had had some Roman stuff & the ploughed field where the main site was. In just over 1 hour doing the spoil & the edge of the ditch I had 7 Roman Coins. Most off them from the ditch cut, especially where ancient ditches perpendicular to the new one joined.

The knife thingy I have no idea, the farmer thought a root cutter? I thought 18th C butchers knife??

Sometimes a ditch can bring up nice things...
Not really an idea on the knife thingy. We had a mix between knife and cleaver here, used for chopping bushes and willow trees. Not as broad as a cleaver but with a thick strong back. Looks quite similar other than the rounded tip. I have found one when i bought this house and restored it. I'll make a pic later.

Here's a pic. These were used for several centuries by the basket makers around.

The knife if an interesting find. I’d tend to think knife over root cutter for the fact that the shank and the blade’s top edge are continuous. Many cutters and saws had the shank inset from the blade

Haha you added that right when I was writing. Perfect example!

This is what I was getting at with my post. Cutter/saws ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1518900864.061926.jpg

Nice going on the ditch hunt, thinking out of the box.
Some of those ditches are nasty with nettles and prickly things.:laughing7:

I do not know, but I will refer back to a couple of ideas from the current cable show I am addicted to:
What could it be...a templar cross or the Ark of the Covenant?
