Do older towns have older coins?

Went to Texas this weekend to visit my son. The town he lives in is a small older town, when I would receive change from a purchase I received not old coins but older coins i.e. 1967,1972 etc (quarters, dimes) in change in stead of the state quarters like I get every time I get change in the city I live in. This happened at the only store in town and only hamburger joint in town.

Is it possible that the older towns tend to have the older coins or was this just a fluke?

Lots of factors gotta figure into the answer.
How many times does the money supply in a small or more isolated area get "turned" through the nearest federal reserve?
That sounds like a job for a local banker!
