Hi Folks,

I started carrying a hand gun after being jumped by
a durggie in a park while metal detecting.

I already have a Davis Ind. derringer that shoots 32
auto,

1-13-7.jpg

Yesterday,,,, I saw a sign at the sporting goods store
down the road. It said;

* 5 day gun sale *
30 to 50 percent off

I just had to stop. Then I just had to have this,

1-13-3.jpg

1-13-6.jpg

Here is a closer look at both of them,

1-13-4.jpg

1-13-12.jpg

Size comparison on tha 32 auto,

6-26-5-1.jpg

6-26-091-1.jpg

The American Arms is a little less than 1/2 inch longer,
and a little slimmer and about the same height. It is
less bulky than the Davis Ind. 32 auto.

1-13-9.jpg

After I bought it, I went out and shot a box of shells out
of it. (50 rounds) I also took some 2 inch thick phone
books to compare the penetration of these two guns,

1-13-1.jpg

I got to shoot a lawyer and his car?.... lol

Here are a few bullets I recovered.

1-13-2.jpg

In the initial test was two shots from each pistol into
a fresh phone book that was backed by another phone
book.

The results were;

NAA 22 Mag <> 2.1 inches of penetration
NAA 22 Mag <> 1.9 inches of penetration
Average penetration <> 2.0 inches

This 22 Mag bullet was sticking into the second phone
book, so I called it 2.1 inches,

1-14-1.jpg

Davis 32Auto<> 1.4 inches of penetration
Davis 32Auto<> 1.2 inches of penetration
Average penetration <> 1.3 inches

According to my questionable Arkie test, The NAA 22
Mag may have about 35% more penetration.

I believe that both pistols may have about the same
amount of energy, but, the smaller 22 Mag makes a
smaller deeper hole.

I have shot another box now.

After shooting several types of targets with both pistols,
I believe the 22 Mag is more likely to penetrate clothing
and other obstacles.

Conclusion;

They are both very loud!!! (for little guns)

The American Arms 22 Mag is a 5 shot revolver. It can
carry five rounds without the firing pin resting on a shell.
That allows me to safely carry it fully loaded .

The American Arms 22 Mag with a 1 and 1/8 inch barrel
is very well made and is far more accurate than the Davis
Ind 32 Auto with a 2 and 1/4 inch barrel. I can shoot three
or four times as far with about the same accuracy as the
32 auto derringer. The action with the 22 is smooth, and
the trigger pull is nice and crisp. (no play) All five rounds
can be fired rapidly with reasonable accuracy for close up
use.

The Davis Industries 32 Auto is very cheaply made with a
terrible trigger pull and it almost takes both hands to cock
it. It gets pocket grit in it and will not rotate the firing into
the upper barrel sometimes!!! It just does not seem as
reliable as the 22 Mag. But it does what it is supposed to
do most of the time.

I am happier with my new little companion.

1-13-8.jpg

I saved myself about $25 in about 30
minutes.

I wanted a pocket holster for my new
NAA 22 Mag.

I could have got one like these for $20
plus shipping,

pocketHolsters.jpg

But, instead, I just made one out of an
old billfold that had thin soft leather. I
like it better..... It's soft leather and it
covers the hammer,

1-15-1.jpg

I know my sewing looks bad,,, but that
ain't no biggie for this old Arkie.

I know a fella that has been carrying an
American Arms 22 Mag for ten years and
loves it. I am starting to see why.

After leaving the shooting range, (down tha road), I took
a few photos out my car window.

Thought you all might like a little Arkie sight seeing,

yes I agree with rmptr....in the communist republic of Kallistan you are not allowed to carry a weapon period....and If you do you will meet all sorts of of members from the local gestapo......that reminds me of an incident that occurred to me over 25 years ago....that prompted me to move to AZ.....I purchased a .30 cal carbine rifle used from a pawn shop, got the paper work in order, at the time I had a 68 El Camino.....placed the rifle in the gun rack and proceeded to drive home......I didn't get more than 3 miles down the road.......and the local gestapo pulled me over and not for speeding......Only because he saw the gun in the window......Told me that I was transporting the gun illegally......he said it had to be placed in the trunk......TRUNK????? I don't have one....I said this is an El Camino...show me where the trunk is.....he said it wasn't his problem that I didn't have one (trunk) because I didn't have a "TRUNK" he was going to have to secure the weapon....two days later, I picked the rifle up from the gestapos head quarters.....I had to transport it in a different vehicle.....one that HAD a TRUNK....and to top things off about 6 months later I get a letter from the communist state of Kallistan telling me I need to turn in the weapon to be complaint....because they( the republic of Kallistan) just passed a law banning assault weapons......in the letter it explained about all the new laws that were passed.....needless to say I moved to az a few months later and never looked back...

db

Lesson learned.....

Glock 30 in .45 ACP fits my back pocket just fine.

Poor folks in Kalifornia. If I lived there I think the wasp spray would be ideal.
If LEO asks just say you have allergy to bee stings.

Well you may be able to stare me down, but I'll really be impressed when I see you stare an angry cougar down (and I don't mean the 50 something woman in a bar).

I still think a scary look on your face would be a poor choice, in a gun fight.

Although I have these....

They are just not practical for carry with all the bending we do.. I do carry the .45 on me when not detecting and always have it in the truck. The Sig 5.56 pistol I can carry under a medium length coat, but of course couldnt detect with it...
Bottom line, the Lesche digger would make a formidable weapon should the need ever arise... I wouldnt want to be impaled with it..

Cachefinder,
Perhaps your ladyfriend with the bruised hand should try a Springfield xd-9 subcompact.
It might fill her hand better to prevent the bruising?

Although we do have a 9mm, I fully agree with Monty's assessment of calibers for defense.
45 or 40 is superior if a serious contest should arise.

Senseless violence, drive-by's, home invasions, car jackings, and other incidents of peril are no longer dedicated to any place, or time. It seems as though it has spread everywhere.
Misfortune will not occur at a time of your choice.
Probably wise to be prepared at all times.

I don't carry any protection other than a small pocket knife. Confrontations with thugs while metal detecting, arrowheading or bottle digging are rare here in Vermont. Running across a rabid animal probably would be my worst fear and that's also quite rare here. I do have a ruger p95 that helps me sleep at night.

in my opinion, things are only going to get much worse than they are now and i think it is wise to be able to protect your family and your self at all times. we are heading into some really hard times and hope that everybody can see it coming. take care and be safe out there. ron

You are so right. Things are headed into the pits. It might take another couple of years, then again...it might not. And not getting into a political discussion, but since the Obama election I think alot of people have felt it as well. The ammo shortages...I think is more related to folks stocking up on ammo rather than the Obama crowd having anything to do with it, though I wouldnt put it past them.

Like you say, protect yourself and your family. Be prepared for the worst because I firmly believe the dark times are coming.

Yup!! I carry a Taurus TCP .380. Just picked up a nice back pocket holster for it.

When I go to the big city parks in more dangerous neighborhoods, it is then my back-up gun and I will also carry a Beretta PX4 sub-compact 9mm IWB.

Don't expect to ever need them, but I have a family that loves me and depends on me, I will will do everything I have to to make it home safe after every hunt.

We wear headphones = So we cannot hear someone as they approach behind us

We are distracted = with our head down and staring at the coil or digging a hole

How is a gun going to protect you when hit from behind?

I think best defense is to detect with a couple friends. That in itself is a good deterent.

I am thinking about doing a conceal and carry class.

Hello,

I usually go with my 9mm (open carry) in a side holster. Most of my hunts are in remote areas and I'm generally by myself. This seems adequate for me. The only time I try to be extra cautious is when I am digging a hole and might miss a predator coming my way, two legged or otherwise.

I use headphones but only turn on one side so as not to totally obstruct my hearing, sure I might miss out on some finds but you never know who or what you may other wise run into, I preffer to err on the side of caution there are bears and occasional mountain lions where I am at and some very unstable people roaming about at times. It seems those same remote places that harbor our favorite homestead area or old farmhouse are appealing to others for grow areas or meth labs and they can be less than friendly and very paranoid.

I would be concerned about trying to get some of those weapons out.
Best to have a holster where you wont get the weapon hung up on anything if you need to retrieve it in a hurry. If someone is watching you and you appear to be alert to your surroundings and armed odds are they will move to an easier target...

Hope this helps,
Monolyth

2008 while hunting in a public park if I would of had my pistol on me I would
of shot this guy, I would of gone to jail for shooting somebody that attacked
me with a bottle. Not worth it, the guy tried to rob me and my buddy not kill
us so I doubt any jury would have voted in my favor for using extream force.

At the end of the day I was hit by a bottle and cut but I still had my wallet,
video camera, metal detector, car keys and that thug got nothing from us.
Would he of tried that if I had a gun on my hip, I doubt it but I was so
pissed in the heat of the moment that I know I would of shot and killed
him but I wasn't armed so I chased him off with my shovel instead. :dontknow:

Oh we don't have CC licences in IL anyways. :'(

Exposed carry has it's pros and it's cons. If you carry exposed, which is allowed in most places, you risk somebody sneaking up on you and grabbing your firearm and using it against you. Of course if you carry exposed, most people won't mess with you. So it's a trade off. I prefer to carry concealed, and I'm allowed to, so I do. Since I rarely run into humans on my hunts, I don't worry about it much. Critters don't much care if it's concealed or exposed... so it don't matter to them. As long as I can grab it out of my back pocket while the cat's leaping I'm happy. That's why I prefer a spurless hammer out in the forest... for those instant motions that don't give you time to fiddle around.

I completely disagree with you... No jury in the world (okay, maybe not the loooons of Kalifornia) would convict you in that situation... I have seen quite a few people in the ER that were either in a coma, or dead, from bottles. A wine bottle can fracture your skull, and if broken first, can be as lethal as a knife... You were very lucky, and the punk is probably now free to prey on someone else...

I forgot to add before that I wear a "Hang Blade", and have since my military stint 30+ yrs ago... They, unlike pocket knives, are as quick to draw as you are reaching for your chest... Quick pull, and it is ready... It also comes in real handy for cutting small roots and anything else you may need a "pocket knife" for while detecting... This is the one I have now, much smaller than the one I had while I was a Ranger... It is small, very light, and would be very well suited for your situation..

Ranger huh? Wonder if we ever shared a beer at the NCO club at Camp Frank D. Merrill. I'm sure you were at that base for mountain phase training at least once during your stint.

I wear a Rattler headphone.

The price of peace is eternal vigilance.
