Hi Folks,

I started carrying a hand gun after being jumped by
a durggie in a park while metal detecting.

I already have a Davis Ind. derringer that shoots 32
auto,

Yesterday,,,, I saw a sign at the sporting goods store
down the road. It said;

* 5 day gun sale *
30 to 50 percent off

I just had to stop. Then I just had to have this,

1-13-3.jpg

1-13-6.jpg

Here is a closer look at both of them,

Size comparison on tha 32 auto,

6-26-5-1.jpg

6-26-091-1.jpg

The American Arms is a little less than 1/2 inch longer,
and a little slimmer and about the same height. It is
less bulky than the Davis Ind. 32 auto.

1-13-9.jpg

After I bought it, I went out and shot a box of shells out
of it. (50 rounds) I also took some 2 inch thick phone
books to compare the penetration of these two guns,

1-13-1.jpg

I got to shoot a lawyer and his car?.... lol

Here are a few bullets I recovered.

1-13-2.jpg

In the initial test was two shots from each pistol into
a fresh phone book that was backed by another phone
book.

The results were;

NAA 22 Mag <> 2.1 inches of penetration
NAA 22 Mag <> 1.9 inches of penetration
Average penetration <> 2.0 inches

This 22 Mag bullet was sticking into the second phone
book, so I called it 2.1 inches,

1-14-1.jpg

Davis 32Auto<> 1.4 inches of penetration
Davis 32Auto<> 1.2 inches of penetration
Average penetration <> 1.3 inches

According to my questionable Arkie test, The NAA 22
Mag may have about 35% more penetration.

I believe that both pistols may have about the same
amount of energy, but, the smaller 22 Mag makes a
smaller deeper hole.

I have shot another box now.

After shooting several types of targets with both pistols,
I believe the 22 Mag is more likely to penetrate clothing
and other obstacles.

Conclusion;

They are both very loud!!! (for little guns)

The American Arms 22 Mag is a 5 shot revolver. It can
carry five rounds without the firing pin resting on a shell.
That allows me to safely carry it fully loaded .

The American Arms 22 Mag with a 1 and 1/8 inch barrel
is very well made and is far more accurate than the Davis
Ind 32 Auto with a 2 and 1/4 inch barrel. I can shoot three
or four times as far with about the same accuracy as the
32 auto derringer. The action with the 22 is smooth, and
the trigger pull is nice and crisp. (no play) All five rounds
can be fired rapidly with reasonable accuracy for close up
use.

The Davis Industries 32 Auto is very cheaply made with a
terrible trigger pull and it almost takes both hands to cock
it. It gets pocket grit in it and will not rotate the firing into
the upper barrel sometimes!!! It just does not seem as
reliable as the 22 Mag. But it does what it is supposed to
do most of the time.

I am happier with my new little companion.

I saved myself about $25 in about 30
minutes.

I wanted a pocket holster for my new
NAA 22 Mag.

I could have got one like these for $20
plus shipping,

pocketHolsters.jpg

But, instead, I just made one out of an
old billfold that had thin soft leather. I
like it better..... It's soft leather and it
covers the hammer,

1-15-1.jpg

I know my sewing looks bad,,, but that
ain't no biggie for this old Arkie.

I know a fella that has been carrying an
American Arms 22 Mag for ten years and
loves it. I am starting to see why.

After leaving the shooting range, (down tha road), I took
a few photos out my car window.

Thought you all might like a little Arkie sight seeing,

A Texas Defender 2barrel 45 cal./.410 derranger loaded with .410 with 000buckshot. It's like shooting 3- 9mm bullets each time you pull the trigger! Of course, this is only for bad or isolated areas. My 80# bulldog is usually good enough!

Oh you mean that kind of protection.

On the beaches, especially with all those women, well.......

you guys a just a tad too violent for me!!!!! at least i only carry a barrett 21a or a glock 17, or a glock 21. as always, i'm a gentlemen!

I have that same Beretta 21-A and it jams often.
Can't seem to find the right brand ammo to feed it.

That's why I got my Glock. No worries. Ever.
G-30 SF fits in my back pocket and will stop most anything I might encounter.
I do have permit but seldom carry firearm in local nice parks.

Hand held Taser seems good for loose dogs and Leche for their a$$hole owners.
"Sorry my dog ate your coil. Never did that before. What leash law?"

Well, folks tend to get upset when you melt their dogs face off.
Even if they are ugly. (The dog, not the people).

Then you have to use the WASP spray on the owner and it gets to be too much to carry.

Never had a problem with a doggy, I carry snacks for them

It's the ugly people that need cleaning up sometimes

I have yet to carry while md'ing. I do have a Concealed carry license, but rarely carry. I own 4 handguns. S&W 357 mag. perfered personal defense but to big to carry concealed. 2 .380s not happy with either one, the gun I keep in the car and do carry concealed now is a Kel-Tec p32. Some say this does not have the range or stopping power. I veiw it as a close range last resort option, and plan on accuracy at center mass in a tight pattern.

I live in NY, I carry a shovel for digging. I have walked the streets of Brooklyn at night and Central Park (not MD'ing) yet never needed a gun, nor been mugged! Can we all take it down a notch Gunsmoke, and get back to detecting? Shhhhhh relaaaaax

I'm wondering what the heck all of you are afraid of while detecting. I never had a nugget shoot back when I was nugget shooting. I also never got metal fatigue while coin hunting.

Carrying a gun is for choice and there is no one around that wants my wheat cent that bad to try and take it from me or even you. This sound like a thread for,"My gun is bigger then your gun", conversation. Guns and detectors are really two different topics and I don't carry while detecting by choice. I do respect your choice to carry while detecting, but I'd rather see your pistols while at the gun range and your detectors while your detecting. I'd rather know what type of detector you carry then the side arm you have with you. This is just my observation on how this thread sounds like a gun slinging old west attitude.

White's GMT

And a .357 magnum, in case the bears or wildcats get hungry.

It's not a matter of protecting myself from humans. Humans don't bother me. At all. I rarely see another human when hunting.

Not all of us hunt in schoolyards where the worst thing you can encounter is an ankle biter.

If you'd ever had to slink 500 yards out of your way in hopes you could get around an angry cougar, you'd understand.

Humans. The kind who will kill a convenience store clerk for $20 in the register. The kind who live from fix to fix. The kind who steal from their mothers and have no remorse. The kind who . . .

Well, you know the kind. Or, with luck, you won't.

Yes, but I never detected in a convenience store. I see your point, but a thief will go where the money is.

It slipped my mind but I had a piece with me in the field on two of the more then a hundred outings with my detector and did not feel safer or tougher. Most people around here are panhandlers that think they can get a buck or two out of a detectorist if their aggressive. Then I just start twitching and foaming at the mouth and they leave as fast as they approached me. Actually I just tell them in an aggresive tone that I detect for what ever money that I can find and I just started for the day and show them pocket change and say see you later when I find something. Some of them watch me for a minute or two and head over to some other person whom looks like a target.

Oh, I live in a rural setting and moved here from the big city two decades ago to get away from the type you referred to.

As I have said in my last post I rarely carry. But I do know that there are people that would kill someone for a few dollars. I work security for a church and have to deal with panhandlers often, some have been aggressive when the church was unable to help them. One has made repeated threats to all the staff, another was arrested a day after I dealt with him for possesson of a fire arm by a fellon( he has been in jail for that and another charge for 2yrs now). My mother worked at a correctional facilty for 20+ yrs, there were many threats made to her and her family. There are gangs in some areas that to be accepted you have to kill a stranger. So yes there are people who will harm you just for the hell of it. I try to hunt safe areas and let my family know where i will be and keep the cell phone on me, dont like to feel that to go mding that i need to be armed, until then Its likely i will not carry why doing this hobby.

I carry a Ruger LCP with Crimson Trace laser trigger gaurd. This world is just too out of control for me to rely on the good graces of others. I do have my CCW permit, so I am legal. And I only draw if I plan to shoot. I was in the military and they taught us that you do not point unless you are ready to shoot, and you don't shoot until they engage you first.
For example, guy comes up with a gun to mug you, or someone has a knife at a considerably close distance. I draw; if the gun is raised and aimed at me I shoot, if the knife starts coming closer to me I shoot. To be on the right side of the law "You have to be in fear of great bodily harm, or death". I am not a lawyer, just telling ya'll what I was taught.

Hunt On!

Hi: That depends where I go, in Alaska when there two of my friends come along, S/W 629 .44 always, 12ga on the ATV. Here in the lower 48 .380 Ruger LCP, or the .45 and that is because they do not make a .46. Period mdl. 1911 colt. Been a firearms dealer for 28 years, detectors, prospecting equipment etc. In Wy. 300 win mag on bike and .44 on hip got plinked at in the wind rivers once never again, warning too close to the good stuff. Now plink back if needed.Hardrock God created man in his own image, Col. Colt made us equal. nuff said. :icon_thumright:

I spent an hour at a board meeting for one of my clubs that talked about this very subject, protection.

It was a coversation of protecting yourself from tics. That is correct...tics. Just as deadly as your perception of a big bad guy behind every tree with a bigger gun then you carry.

Now wouldn't that just make you feel silly coming home with tics on you that can give you lime disease or Rocky Mountain Spoted fever from a tic bite and realize the guy you were scared of was worried about that very same thing.

I put my bazooka away when I hung up my uniform decades ago. I think that advise is good for others also. Oh, by the way, I'm heavy armed also but I will never brag about it or pull my piece out for a tic. Even if the tic is a twitch on someone elses face.
