I think you have Venice, CA not Venice, FL.

I thought for sure I saw Playa drl Ray on there and some other places in California.

I like Venice alright. Like every beach town in Florida it has its good and bad points. Florida is overcrowded and getting worse every day. Apartments are springing up like mushrooms all across the state because real-estate has gotten so expensive few young folks can afford to buy. It's definitely not the Florida from a few decades back or my childhood. I don't know you but would caution you to move here. Maybe come down & rent for a year, if you like it fine. I'm a native and live near the beach, to me there is no reason to live inland but Florida has some beautiful rural country. Sadly, developers backed by greedy politicians who are given money by said developers are trying to clear cut & pave every square inch of our beautiful state. I'm currently looking at land in Northern Idaho.

I would try renting for 6 months if possible, or a year, then renew if things go ok.

I have no desire to buy a house. I've heard bad things about hurricanes and insurance companies.

Don't let the Florida-haters scare you. There are good and bad points for every city in the United States. If you're coming from Virginia, you'll love the mild traffic in Venice. You'll also be at the beach, which is a great place to detect, and since Venice isn't a huge place, there shouldn't be much competition. I would definitely find a job there first, though, before moving. That's a good idea no matter where you're moving. And rent prices are high all over, not just Venice. Lastly, I wouldn't worry about alligators. Sure, they're around in places, but not in the places frequented a lot by the public - and they're certainly not roaming the neighborhoods, looking for pets to eat. I live in Clearwater, which is also right on the coast, and I'm 1/2 mile from the bay and 6 miles to the beach. I've never seen a gator in either place. I concur about getting a generator; it saved my bacon last summer when I had to use it for almost a week. You should be able to find a decent one for about $500.00. You can also find good ones used by people who are moving away. The odds of a direct hit on your city by a hurricane is very low. If you can get flood insurance, it would be a good idea to have it - just in case.

Venice is very nice, very quiet, nice beaches loaded with sharks teeth. Mostly retirees. Lived in no va myself 35 years ago. Best move ever. Hated the DC area. Probably not much for work down there though, unless it's in the service and tourism industry.

Moved to Daytona after nearly 10 years living in Baltimore, & went through Ian I think it was that year. The quoted text is spot on, just be prepared, & you'll be fine.

If you are renting be prepared as Florida (or at least anywhere we have lived, maybe it's not the entire state, just check into it) has no rent-control like we had up north. It was always written in the lease that the rental increase was 5%, our first lease renewal in Daytona & they wanted $500 more a month. The next year it was $600, & for that kind of money, we moved to Southern Florida. Not paying nearly $3k to rent in Daytona lol.

If you are looking at Condos, be very very careful. Like - contact a lawyer to review the sale careful. Lot of stuff going on right now with news laws going into effect after the SurfSide condo collapse in Miami.

Sorry that I don't have Venice specific information. But wanted to chime in since I saw you were moving from Virginia & it's semi-similar to my experience.

Thank you for pointing out the rent increase. That is absurd. I'm dure the people who own those homes already make more than enough to cover their mortgage if they still have one.

I guess I would have to ask about that, but they could always say they wouldn't increase it, then when it's time to renew increase it and just say things have changed since we last spoke.

Depends on your lease agreement. Some leases require some dont. Some owners board for you, some furnish the hurricane shutters others dont. It is something you find out before signing lease.

Be sure you have renters insurance if you rent.

I grab a junk ring and toss it as far as I can toss it and say, okay go get it then.

Ring size was maybe a 5, his wife would have needed an 11 she was so big

It's Florida, If beach has parking lot they are going to be crowded in the summer, rest of the year not too bad.
