Does anybody know what its like to live in Venice, FL?

We stayed in Venice for a month one winter to see if was a doable.
Discovered that between 3:30-4:30 PM it was dangerous 😳 to be going anywhere in Venice.
It was around that time slot all the grey haired folks were going out to get the early dinner specials.
Seen alot of scary things on the roads, big cars and eyes looking between the steering wheel and the dashboard.

Sharktooth hunting was a bonus 👌

There are miles and miles of suburbs. House after house after house....the traffic sucks most of the time. But....the beaches are spectacular most of the time. Once in awhile there will be red tide....that shuts the beach down from time to time. There is top notch shelling, and sharks teeth can be had by the thousands. If you dive offshore large megalodon teeth can be found regularly. Metal Detecting can be frustrating with very fine soft shifting sand. But regularly hitting the spots for fresh drops can be productive in the shallow water. Inshore fishing is also great....I mean world class fishing !!

When you said fresh drops, initially I read that was fresh droppings.....LOL.

Not much difference everything paved and developed to the max....with suburbs stretching for miles. Great beaches, but horrible traffic and overcrowding.

Some parts are just bonkers with overcrowding and home construction....nature has been evicted from the landscape.....and they wonder why the red tide is getting worse.....they erased all the mangrove habitat.

While I don't live in Venice, we live about an hour North here in Saint Petersburg. We go down to Venice often (to hunt for shark's teeth) and it's a nice area. Of all of the places in Florida I've been to, I still always prefer my home town here in Saint Petersburg. Our beaches are the best, there's plenty to do here, and we're pretty central to all of the other cities here in our area.

The downside of hurricanes that everyone seems to mention is really not as much of an issue here in our area, due to the location and how the the cooler North winds and warmer South winds meet about where we're at... so "most" hurricanes track either North or South of our location. Not to say that we can't get a direct hit... but it's been a very long time (over 80 years) since that's happened. If you're prepared for hurricane season, and especially if you can find a non-flood & non-evacuation zone to live in like we do... there's not as much to be concerned about. Definitely be prepared, and definitely have a good generator when/if the power goes out. You really just need to power your fridge and a small floor or window AC unit. Everything else I just use my camping gear to supplement what we need (ex. butane/propane stoves, headlamps, USB-rechargeable lights, solar power stations, tiki torches, storable hiking/emergency food, water filters, etc)

The cost to live down here is certainly pretty high, which I guess is the price we pay to live where other's vacation... but I don't mind it. My company (13.5 years) sent us home to work remotely during the pandemic, and I've continued doing so ever since. I already told them that I'll never commute 45mins to an hour each way to Clearwater to go work in a physical office ever again.

Anyway, Florida is different than most of the other states... but as a Florida Native, who has been born & raised here, it's a good kind of different. 😊👍🏽

Don't let the Florida-haters scare you. There are good and bad points for every city in the United States. If you're coming from Virginia, you'll love the mild traffic in Venice. You'll also be at the beach, which is a great place to detect, and since Venice isn't a huge place, there shouldn't be much competition. I would definitely find a job there first, though, before moving. That's a good idea no matter where you're moving. And rent prices are high all over, not just Venice. Lastly, I wouldn't worry about alligators. Sure, they're around in places, but not in the places frequented a lot by the public - and they're certainly not roaming the neighborhoods, looking for pets to eat. I live in Clearwater, which is also right on the coast, and I'm 1/2 mile from the bay and 6 miles to the beach. I've never seen a gator in either place. I concur about getting a generator; it saved my bacon last summer when I had to use it for almost a week. You should be able to find a decent one for about $500.00. You can also find good ones used by people who are moving away. The odds of a direct hit on your city by a hurricane is very low. If you can get flood insurance, it would be a good idea to have it - just in case.

Venice is very nice, very quiet, nice beaches loaded with sharks teeth. Mostly retirees. Lived in no va myself 35 years ago. Best move ever. Hated the DC area. Probably not much for work down there though, unless it's in the service and tourism industry.

Moved to Daytona after nearly 10 years living in Baltimore, & went through Ian I think it was that year. The quoted text is spot on, just be prepared, & you'll be fine.

If you are renting be prepared as Florida (or at least anywhere we have lived, maybe it's not the entire state, just check into it) has no rent-control like we had up north. It was always written in the lease that the rental increase was 5%, our first lease renewal in Daytona & they wanted $500 more a month. The next year it was $600, & for that kind of money, we moved to Southern Florida. Not paying nearly $3k to rent in Daytona lol.

If you are looking at Condos, be very very careful. Like - contact a lawyer to review the sale careful. Lot of stuff going on right now with news laws going into effect after the SurfSide condo collapse in Miami.

Sorry that I don't have Venice specific information. But wanted to chime in since I saw you were moving from Virginia & it's semi-similar to my experience.

As long as the condo was built less than 30 years ago you should be fine.

You couldn't pay me enough money to swim or even fish where there are gators. Trying to downplay their danger is poor journalism, to say the least.
