I found this today but it's kind of hard to make out. Does anybody know off the top of their head what/when exactly it was from?

I definitely see in the middle at the silver part an eye, nose, mouth and as it goes into the dark area a chin, I think I can also make out a helmet, so I think it's a roman soldier type profile of a head on it.

It also appears to have either some writing or a design around the outer edges of it.

Hopefully the OP can clean it up a bit so we can better see the image on it.

The head to me looks sorta like this...I could be wrong about it being a roman soldier but I definitely see a face profile.

Ok so I put it in my ultrasonic cleaner with some salt and vinegar and here's what came out.
It says Republique Francaise

Athena, Minerva, or maybe a dozen more I omitted.

Can you make out any of the words? It's hard to tell looking on my phone.

You are correct, it very similar to this French coin, which does have right facing Marianne profile on it.

Interesting find. The design is the same as that used on medals produced for the 1900 ‘Exposition Universelle’ in Paris, France (in various metals) featuring Marianne on the obverse as an embodiment of the French Republic:

I would think it’s either been recast from one of those medals, or perhaps was an actual medal, repurposed for something else. Possibly a bridle rosette. Here’s another one that also has a mount soldered to it. I can’t see any trace of the reverse design on either yours or the ebay item:
