Does this explain why I never find 2001 halves?

I find it odd that you don't find 2001 halves, I get them all the time, very common here.

what mint mark? and i belive it did say they were released in certain areas. I get tons of 2000s and very few 99 and 2001. so apparently they loaded us up in 2000 and somewere else in 99 and 01

I have gotten rolls & rolls of unc. 2001's

I get the 2001's in my area also. The red book says the 2001-P's were not minted for circulation. I didn't realize that until a week or so ago.

Like I said this must not be the place where they released them. I think I have found one nice unc 99 and 6 or so 2001. most are pretty beat up by the time they get here and I see 10 times more 2000 halves.

Most of the 'not issued for circulation' coins were minted in limited quanities (2-3 million). There were over 21 million 2001P minted. Hard to believe that the mint would be sitting on that many coins.

LJ, that's an apparent typo in the 2007 Red Book It's only the 02-present that were not released for general circulation.........and their low minted volumes (as goldinmypan stated) support that.

It seems to me that halves are distributed in a very irregular way. I'm pretty new to this, but in the last month or so I've been through maybe $250 of loose halves and rolls that I found a few at a time. Probably 1/3 of those coins were either 1999-D or 2001-D. Not so many of them in my first box today. Said box had at least 1 1994-P in every roll though, and usually at least five. This despite the fact that only 13-14% of circulating coins in my area come from the Philadelphia mint. Also worth noting is that I've found ZERO 1988-P and 1992-P coins and only one each of 1989-P, 1990-P, 1991-P, and two 1993-P, in all of my searching. All the 1994-Ps in this box were immaculate. After ten rolls or so, I could pick them out by their edges alone!

my Whitman blue book of coins also states that the 2001P were uncirculated, yet they made 21,200,000 of them. MS-63 $4.00

I have 4 of them, the only worthwile coin in most of my boxes.

I get alot of 2001D's as well, but practice catch & release with those!

Bigtime is there any way you know of to find out when that offer was originally placed on the mint's site?It say's the D's were released in limited quantities in certain areas, but gives no indication as to what "limited" actually means.

Maybe it's been like that since '01-'02 and since then, they have released all the remaining unsold '01's P & D into circulation?

Could also explain why we see so many '02-'06 in circulation nowadays. They couldn't sell them and released them into circulation?

With a bag selling for $130.95/200 halves,a single coin only costs $.65 from the MINT,and the other offer of 2 rolls for $32.95 puts them at $.82 each.Explains why dealers won't buy them :'(

Anyone remember the GSA sales in the 60's? I was too young to purchase any, but from what I have read the mint was taking inventory in the 50's and discovered that they had a boat load of uncirculated Carson City Morgan dollar coins stored in their vaults. They had a majority of some of the years coins. Man it must have been hard to have a CC dollar you thought was rare and then find out the mint was still holding onto 80% of the mintage and was going to sell them to the public. I think they offered the last of these dollars for sale to the public in the 80's.

They held onto a large inventory of the Susan B. dollars until they finally ran out in the late 90's and then they had to mint them again in 1999 I believe.

I got two different bags on seperate occasions. One was 2001-D and one was 2001-P. Every single coin!

Same here!! All bright & shiny but very few live up to my standards for BU. They all have scratches, bag marks and and little nicks. It is like they used a softer metal on this batch. I have seen coins 20 years older that were in better shape.

(this is from the mints website) The United States Mint is opening the vault and offering never before released 2001-dated (P) Kennedy half dollars! To complete

The mint is a business. They are out to make money (pun intended) This is just a marketing line to make you think they are rarer and thus more valuable. Look at all the k-rap coins they have come out with recently. Poor quality art/engraving and mediocre minting.

It is just like a piece of junk kids toy that is not worth the cost of the carton it is packaged in. But the toy company keeps pushing it on the kids over and over until the kids think it is something they absolutely must have.

Yes, the mint has revived coin collecting with many thousands of new collectores but they could have done it with nicer designs and lower prices.

(I will now get off my soap box ;D)
