Dogs to sniff out gold? has anyone tried this?

Just curious, has anyone ever tried to train a dog to sniff out gold? does it have a smell?
It would seem to me that with the sensitivity of a dogs nose, they might be useful in sniffing out gold assuming gold has some smell.

I have to believe this is possible with the right dog and the right training. I have no experience with dogs or training animals, but my gut tells me this is absolutely possible.
Even if the dog had an 80% hit rate it would be worth doing

Yes as long as you know that gold itself has no odor. The dog is sniffing for related chemical signatures such as iron sulfide or other non-inert chemicals.

Kevin may have a point here. I've had several dogs that were able to pick a rock out of a fast moving creek that I'd just tossed, so I know they can smell under water.
