Yes as long as you know that gold itself has no odor. The dog is sniffing for related chemical signatures such as iron sulfide or other non-inert chemicals.

Kevin may have a point here. I've had several dogs that were able to pick a rock out of a fast moving creek that I'd just tossed, so I know they can smell under water.
