Doing your homework pays off again!!! 1803 & 1804 Large Cents

There is a time in your Metal Detecting career when you ask yourself, is this site going to be as good as the last one! So when you do research and come across something that gets your heart pumping, you just know it’s going to be good! That is what happened when we arrived at this site today ……As Tim mentioned we started at the (2 old Cellar Hole site) and the finds are running very thin there. Well after detecting it for a little over 2 years now you know the Pickens are getting thin. So the new plan was to head down south and go check out 2 sites that I had worked on in my office over the past couple of days. Now as I mentioned earlier when you find something doing research, you hope it pays off and you find some nice coins and Relics. But after a couple of hours we found nothing but a few trinkets.
So now with it almost lunch we have a quick bite to eat and once again we pull out the maps and see what kind of sites we have to look at for the rest of the day. With plan 4 in effect and taking place, the day really looks bleak. Knocking on some farmer’s door is never a problem for me, I will do it if the time calls for it and the site has great potential…We were discussing this, I pull out the maps and one of them was from a place that I did some research on last fall but never had the chance to detect it. So we got in out vehicles and off we went. We arrived and got right into it …….we all know what happened according to Tim…….. He had a great day and one to always remember! This picture is of the Cellar hole where the purse was found! Five feet in front of the moss covered wall in the distance!

I have always been one who believes in the phrase. What you put into it is what you get out of it! Research is a must and it will improve your chances of finding some great finds. I made a copy of a small portion of a very old map and happen to have it with me on that day. On it was the names and location of the old roads, so as I compared them to the more recent map I noticed that the Cellar hole we hit first was the one that gave up the Coin cache Tim found and that was sweet! Boooooo! :P Lolol…..Only kidding! Anyway after all the excitement I drifted around the old foundation and pulled out an 1849 large cent in nice shape.

A short time later I find a small sleigh bell and flat button with some gold gilt on it. Now with not much area to detect due to the amount of brush and trees we decided to take a small break.
Back at the trucks we are all standing there looking at the finds and the SILVER! Jeff decides to call it quits while talking to Timmy. I happen to be across the road looking at something that just seemed to be different and out of the ordinary. You know something..When it comes to detecting you surely need a little luck and luck is what we had that day. So after Jeff had left for the day, I asked Tim if he wanted to quit or go over into the wood across the street and what happened ……….The first 5 minutes, I found 2 Draped Bust large Cents. Tim said come on; I think he thought I was kidding. But they were real, the 1803 is still readable but the 1804 is rough but you can just make out the 804 on it. Then I think we just looked at them and said what the heck.

Now as we continued what happened, Tim pulls out the reale and I find another Bust large cent but this one was under a root and a hole full of water so you know what that’s like. So without dragging this on any longer we found plenty of buttons, potters, clay pipe stems and a number of the old pewter spoon pieces.

Within an hour and a half, we had plenty of nice old Relics of what now is a very old home site with some great potential. I just hope when we go back soon, we have the same luck we had that day! Enjoy!

Good luck and Keep on Digging!!! The SEEKER

Great finds!!! I have a couple of questions please. What exactly is a cellar hole? And where can I find old maps? I have tried on the internet but I have had no luck. Again great job and thank you for any help you can provide!!!!

I can answer some of your questions or maybe all of them. LOL

A cellar hole is a place where an old house sat and they had a cellar or basement as we call them here in Ohio and Indiana. In the east you find them in the woods where old houses once stood. Lots of times, people would bury their valuables in the cellar walls or in the dirt floor.

As for maps, I find mine at local libraries and museums. I have copied 5 counties and all the townships in each county from the local County Atlases from the 1860's. I then take a plate map from now and compare it with the old one. It is amazing how much they are still alike. Each township map includes all the sections of that township, locations of old one room school houses, farms, churches and towns and of course roads. I always look for the roads that are no longer on current maps, but were on the old maps. Then look to see where dwellings were at near those roads that are no longer used.

Good Luck in finding your old maps. Ringfinder

Hey Ringfinder.........You took the words right out of my mouth! Great job . There are a few other places I would like to add to that list. One being the Historical Society, they have great information ( if they let you review it) . Another place is your town surveys office , they have all the old maps of the town you live in. Another is word of mouth, talk to as many of the locals who have lived their for generation , their familys must have great knowledge on who , what , when , and where! In your town! ;)
The sites and resources are endless and other is right on your computer , you will find some great info and that to will aid in your searches........I hope all this adds to your now library of information! Good luck in your future hunts............ ;)
