Dollars in the Scoop

Yeah it's RINGS that turn me on. No rings this afternoon but did get a bit of a shock with this scoopful from my local beach in Southern California.

Six dollar coins in the scoop! Two Sacajawea and four president coins (plus a dime).

I very carefully covered the area, about 10' X 10' and even scooped away a six inch deep layer where the coins were...but only a couple quarters and dimes.

Those aren't your normal Sacagawea coins. They are the Native American coins that are part of the law that authorizes the Presidential Dollar program. They still use the Sacajawea obverse, but you'll notice there is no date near her shoulder. The date and mint mark are incussed along the edge. They only have a mintage that can vary from year to year, but it is set at 10% of the total presidential dollars for any given year. As more and more of the presidential dollars sit the Federal Reserve vaults, there is less of a demand. Consequently, the mintages for the Presidents have fallen and has caused the Native American coins to have tiny mintages. The one (reverse showing) is the 2010 Native American dollar. It commemorates the Iroquois confederation. The Hiawatha belt has the Great White Pine as the central element which signifies the Onondaga Nation. The four squares represent the Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, and Seneca Nations. The Belt encircles a bundle of five arrows to symbolize the strength and unity of the Confederacy.

A really neat find. I do like finding the silver and gold rings, but that is always a welcome sight! Last year in a local park I did the same thing. Found 6 loonies (CDN $), in one hole.

Unfortunately they weren't as clean as yours. 'Geuss it comes with the territory!

You just tied my dollar coin total in one scoop. The change machine at the beach parking lot dispenses dollar coins to feed the meters here.
