Is this a square nail? I've never found one. If it is how old might it be? I found it in an old fire pit under a rock bluff. It gave off the grunt of iron that I normally skip but it was in that pit so I went after it to see what it was. Now I'm curious. 20170102_145439.webp20170102_145457.webp

Yep also called a cut nail

Looks like an old square/cut nail. Too long for a horseshoe nail. Looks like a drop, don't think it was ever fired:laughing7:. Tony

I LIKE some of these. I find identical ones to your in Civil War camps. Definitely a square nail and I would also date it in the 19th century.

Funny you haven't found one before. I'd bet I have a gallon can full of them!
