I hunted the back of a house that had not given up much in the front yard. The house dates back to the mid-1800s.

Found these two Seated Liberty dimes about 3 feet apart. The very worn one is 1853/54-O because you can see the right large arrow near the date area. My first Seated Liberty coin with arrows! About 3 feet away I got a real blazer--the 1887-S. Too bad about the small scratch on the obverse that must have happened on its way from San Francisco.

Also dug 4 nice IH cents 1886, 2x1887, and 1904 as well as my oldest dog license dated 1923 and worn (lost) by dog number 5!

More pics later and a few cool relics too!

Double seated .......very nice

Thanks 46Wheat!

Seated coins are hard enough to come by and two Seated coins back to back, 3 feet apart like that felt kinda magical. Plus those large arrows are not easy to find...too bad that dime was so worn, but to me a more interesting piece of history as that coin has some serious stories to tell.

Double seated .......very nice

Thanks JG!

Was not expecting old silver with the slick one (first one). as it sounded like a copper cent and so far the house had yielded little, except for 2 IH cents in the front yard that were far between. I dug the second Seated Liberty a couple minutes later, followed by two more deep IH cents. I think I've had a couple dreams like that! :laughing7:

Finding 2 in one hunt would cause a smile for several days. Usually the good stuff is found in the front along a walk or an old tree in my experiences. Nice hunt!

Wow real nice! Seated are just amazing coins. One is great, two is incredible. Congrats!!!

Hi Old Dude!

I agree, but I pretty much struck out in the front and side of the house that looked so inviting. I did find a 20th century silver thimble intact, but not much else. There is new lawn right in front of the door (avoided that) and a lot of trees, the large roots of which made digging miserable. The first IH 1904 (I think) came from the front wedged between roots...miracle I didn't scratch it badly during recovery. Decided to give the back a go again as sadly half of the yard has had its strata disturbed and I dug a Memorial cent at 8" last weekend. Frustrating to say the least, but I finally found rich dark soil and that's where the Seated Liberty dimes came from.

Getting a tone from under big old roots are my favorite scenarios. Those are one that I just won't give up on. Wtg on not giving up in the backyard.

Thanks brother  I've only dug a couple over the last 15 years so two back-to-back like that was a thrill I won't forget soon. The large arrows (glad at least one survived!) was the icing on the cake there.

Thanks Don! Broke my heart when I carefully removed the dirt and saw the scratched face as the details I could see looked mint, but at least I didn't do it and the remainder of the coin is very sharp. That coin traveled a long way from CA to our area! :laughing7: Here's what they looked like when I brought them home. Took a lot of will power to not remove the dirt on the 1887-S in the field!

Great finds! The 87-S is a killer.

Beautiful dimes!, congrats to you

Great saves!!

The 87 is a real beauty !!!

Sad to think about the treasures that lie under the regraded 1/2 of the back yard. But I'll keep plugging away. I guess I was briefly spoiled by digging those Seated Liberty dimes back-to-back. Coins of that era are few and far between here.

Those are some sweet coins. Love the 1887!
