DRAWING A BLANK ? ~ Beware the snake in the grass !
Greetings fellow Treasure Netters. I hope you are all well and as comfortable as possible. I myself am starting to relax after another LONG LONG day of Vacating. “Vacating” : as defined in the Funk and Wagnalls Standard Desk Dictionary, Volume 2 : verb 1. To make vacant; surrender possession of by removal . 2. To set aside; annul. 3. To give up (a position or office); quit. 4. To leave an office, position place, etc. 5. To go away; leave.
Ok, let’s see... I’ve surrendered my possession of my mind, by removal.. I’ve lost it. I’ve “set aside” my responsibilities for the week, (not working). I’ve QUIT worrying about getting up early and or staying up too late. And. I have “left” home every day to go somewhere else. Yeah.. I’ve been “vacating” <laughing> Yeah, I’m on vacation this week. I’m having to fend for myself and entertain myself as my darling wife is off to the Nation’s Capitol to attend a national convention for her organization. Oh MY! A diehard metal detecting enthusiast suddenly left unattended, unencumbered and experiencing good weather and LOTS OF FREE TIME! Whatever will I do? YEEEEHAAAWWWW!!!!
Ok, so I’ve had to stop detecting on account of the sun going down, actually having to eat and sleep, and some down time for driving between hunting sites... it hasn’t been ALL non-stop detecting. I’ve done a bit though. Starting yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) for a few hours, and continuing pretty much most of the day today, I’ve put some miles on the car and some time on my detector. Where did I go you might ask? Well I did have to use a little logic, to start with. I mean, School’s out for summer, the weather is suddenly clear and mild as opposed to the tropical heat and humidity and storms of the past few weeks here locally. My normal venue of choice would be the local parks around my town, but they were and are quite crowded this week. Hey... School’s out for the summer though.. right? <smile> Well I’ve been meaning to make a tour of the surrounding counties and their elementary schools and playgrounds. So, that’s what I did, a grand tour of grade schools and their parade of playgrounds. Although I did still attempt to hunt at one of my local parks first, the always productive “Movie Hill”, but it wasn’t terribly productive this week... at least not as far as coin counts go anyway. I did find a bunch of plastic stuff and other eyeball finds.
I found dozens and dozens of those shaped rubber bands that are such the rage now. The so called “silly bands” went mostly to the nearest garbage can, but I saved a few that I thought were interesting...
More plastic finds were some soda caps (Coke Rewards) that I picked up for my wife... brownie points!
I’d tell you about the big honkin’ silver ring that I found on the hill this week... if I still had it. <hanging head in shame> Yes... I’m pretty sure it was silver, I could see an inscription or stamp inside the band, but it still had dirt on it, I put it into my finds bag... or so I thought... and kept detecting. Apparently I MISSED my bag entirely. How in the H*** ? *sigh* Oh well, I have something to look forward to the NEXT time I go back to Movie Hill. <laughing> Provided someone else doesn’t rescue it from the grass before I get back there this weekend. That’ll be a story to tell. “Lost, then found... then lost again... then found again!” Well I won’t count my chickens before they hatch. I don’t want to jinx myself after all.
Someone else got jinxed at the Movie Hill already. I don’t if that person was responsible for a whole bunch of locks or locked doors or perhaps a janitor or something, but they lost an entire ring of keys! It’s not unusual to find the occasional key here or there, even a set like car keys or something. But an entire ring of keys? Bet there were a bunch of locks getting changed somewhere this week.
Got to be careful picking up those eyeball finds as well as digging any targets this time of year. The scarier denizens of the grass are out and active now in the warmer temperatures. Mind that you don’t tread on them, or get bit by them. SNAKES!!! I caught this bugger laying there in the sun just watching me with those cold beady little eyes. I thought I’d bring it home and share it with my wife... when she gets back from D.C. <chuckle> Snake anyone?
Okay, okay, okay, so it’s a PLASTIC snake... and purple of all things! <grin> Admit it, it’s still a fun find. How many of you would prefer to pick up a REAL, LIVE snake instead? Uh Huh... that’s what I thought!
Moving on. Aside from my favorite haunt at Movie Hill, I took in a total of six elementary schools this week. That’s not counting four others that I declined to get out of the car and fire up the detector for whatever reasons. Those four still took up travel time and gas I suppose, but since I was on a bit of a safari anyway, they were just part of the tour.
You never know what you’re going to find, ANYWHERE you search. But at school yards you often get surprises that just leave you wondering. You find the usual suspects, pull tabs, grommets, buttons, zipper pulls, coins of course, but there are always a few things that make you go “HUH”? Bullets for one. I’ve found LIVE ammunition that could still be fired, I’ve found spent ammunition, shells or casings, and the bullets or shot. I found a spent bullet at one of the playgrounds today actually. I’m guessing it’s a 25 caliber bullet, or something damned close to it anyway, it’s bigger than a 22.
There is always something that fools you too, the stuff that shows up as a coin target (or in that range anyway) and turns out to be some other trash metal.
Then there are the targets that are coins, but not money... TOKENS! Found two today as well...
And some coins are money, but not from this country. Foreign coins seem to pop up fairly often in school yards and playgrounds. Novelty I suppose. Show and tell? No matter the reason they were brought to school, and lost, I have fun finding them.
Gracias Amigo~ I found one coin today that still has me wondering. I’ve read time and time again here on T-Net about the odd coins that people freak out over and scramble to get appraised and what not. Those coins that have been mistruck or errors or that sort of thing. How about a BLANK? A coin that has NOT been struck at all. I’ve seen them on television shows and the like when the process is followed from the forming of the sheet, stamping of the blanks and then striking of the blanks to eventually make the finished coin. How “valuable” is a blank that makes it into circulation? Have a look...
This “blank” is the exact same size as the finished penny, the exact same weight... 2.0 grams. At first I thought it was smoothed down somehow, sanding or polishing it to get that smooth blank finish. But if it were, then material would have been removed and the coin wouldn’t weigh the same and the finished coin. Hmm... Yeah. I’m still perplexed. I’m DRAWING A BLANK so to speak. <grin> Anyone out there know anything about this? I’ll set it aside and see what I can find out about it. I won’t be adding it into my clad total just yet. Not that I will miss one penny after yesterday and today’s hunts. I think I covered my gas anyway, even with the traveling I did. Another fine addition to the vacation fund (which I’m NOT tapping this week even though I’m ON vacation). Now that just doesn’t make sense does it? <laughing> Oh well, save it for the next beach trip I guess... and it’s adding up. Today’s (and yesterdays too) totals were a nice $17 plus. WooHoo!
Going to have to go cash in the coins at the bank soon, my deposit bag is getting too full to zip closed! I can convert it to paper money so that I can keep adding to it. Oh NO! That means I’ll have to go detecting again this week. TOMORROW MAYBE! *sigh* It’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it I suppose. <smile> Hope you all get to get out and have a little fun this week too. As always...
