Ever since I saw that show "Cash & Treasures" this week about finding bottles in privies, I've been dying to dig the one out that I posted previously. Let's just say, my finds weren't as glamorous as what they found. :D
I had dug down to about the 2 foot deep level in the past and found a crystal candy or sugar bowl lid , broken glass pieces, and some nylons. After watching that show & seeing they were down about 6 foot in their dig, I figured that maybe I hadn't dug down near enough. Well I dug down to about 5 feet and wasn't hitting squat. Not even broken glass. My detector wasn't picking up anything either. I stuck a probe in, but only came up with red NC clay. At that point I had learned three things:
1) NC clay soil is a real @#$&*! to dig.
2) You can actually sweat like a dog in the winter even at about 35 degrees.
3) I had overshot the dark doo-doo layer about 3 feet back up!!! It was nice compost now.
Anyways, I found a graniteware pot (you can see it by my bucket), a marble, a bumper guard from what I think is a 1950's car, a small metal suppository ( :D),and a round metal whats-it.
No old bottles, and my arms and back are killing me.
I think I'll just stick to cache hunting & coinshooting now on this particular property.
The good news though is, my wife says it looks like I lost some weight since I started back up MDing. ;)
Have a good w/end,
MM

I FEEL SORRY FOR THE KID THAT SWALLOWED THAT MARBEL!! ;D ;D ;D now go and rest that back!

Dang, that was a lot of work. I know where 2 old out houses are and I just wonder if I would have the same luck. One is where an old one room school house was torn down many years ago. Good luck to you and don't give up.

Well that stinks! ;D That whatsit looks like a part off of a wheel hub or brakes or something.Only too small for a car or tractor.Unless it was for a riding mower or something. :-\ I've definitely seen one of those before, just can't picture it right now.I'm not nuch of a mechanic.Maybe you need to find a public privy to dig! :o You know, one that got more use! ;D.Did you screen that dirt as you dug it up? They always make it look easy on TV! :) Rest up my good man,you deserve it!

Thanks. I was too "pooped" to screen. ;D Actually that clay soil doesn't screen too well. The only screen I want to see now is the TV screen. ;D

MM,
I'm very impressed with your determination. That clay IS really hard to dig! At least you won't wonder what was down there.

I started the day at the Jaycee park in Apex. First time I've ever been there. The soccer field is completely infested with lead. I left that place
and got lost looking for a frisbee golf course.

Finally made it back to a familiar field and dug up clad for the rest of the day.

You gotta try new places and things! ;)

I always wanted to dig a out house I hope to soon, way to go, That whats it is a clutch plate

Yup,

It's a clutch plate. That must of been hard to swallow! The farmer must have been really pissed to throw it in to the John. (so to speak)

Yep,you guys beat me to it.I was getting ready to watch the "Bud Shootout" when it hit me! I knew i'd seen that thing before.

man what a crappy way to find treasure!Gotta give you a for effort though.Have a couple of places on my folks property that had the old privy's been thinking about trying them, but no more than i found at the homesite think i will wait awhile.Couldn't ask for better weather though, better than doing it in the summer. What's your average temps in the carolina's during the winter and summer??Been thinking about moving and was wondering what it was like in your part of the world.........rh

Great pics and enjoyed reading your thread.Gee some-one may thank you for digging out the privy."ITS NOW READY FOR USE ONCE AGAIN" ;D ;D

Relik,
I moved from Calif about 14 years ago. I miss that weather. No humidity or bugs out there. ;D
Our winters are pretty mild here. I hate the summers though. Very hot & humid, with bugs & snakes. ;D
I guess that's better than the tornado's you get though. NC is a booming place for sure. Great real estate market & lots of jobs in this area. You also have the mountains and ocean close by.

Well that stinks. The good/bad news is that there is probably at least one if not more old privies. It was customary when a hole was full to cap it off with clay then dig another generally right next to it. Now that may sound like a bunch of crap and that may be the only one depending upon the age of the place. There is a lot of 'dirt' about old holes here at www.antique-bottles.net in the digging section. Good luck with your future hunting...Shoot

Thanks mm hat's exactly what is was wanting to know........take care bud.....rh

Looking at the construction of what remained of that outhouse, it doesn't appear to be all that old. Maybe that's why you didn't find much. Somewhere there is probably a much older pit, and maybe the only way to determine where is to look for slight depressions in the area, different vegetation, or probe it.

The marble is nice, but not worth digging out all that clay. LOL You deserve lots of credit for trying, that's for sure. Better luck next time, I really wouldn't give up on privies.
