I have a lot of shell material myself. a lot of people on here have no idea what they're looking at when they see it. the responses are weird. talking about plummets yesterday got me to go to my favorite spot to find them. no luck today. but I did find a shell celt. it's the second 1 from that spot is the last 3 days
Love it, love it!!! Those are some really heavy duty, thick adzes!! In my area, for the flatter ones, they used Busycon sp. (usually), no strombus gigas here in Tampa Bay.
I have some what were made from a columnella and were socketed adzes (no pics!...), as well as the type you have. They come in all sizes for the right job.
Most are broken, of course! Those who are not from FL should understand they used shell here as much as they could for tools that would normally be made from chert.
Wow, that's got a long bevel. It looks like Horse Conch?? Pleuroploca gigantea, the Florida State Shell, muhaha. It also looks like the business end of one of these types, what the museum calls a Type A cutting edge (adze) . In areas with this type of shell adze you often find the broken off ends, they look great in one case. Still, it could be socketed type, don't we wish we had the rest!?
The museum reference, not same species..is Busycon
I hope I'm not driving you nuts with all this shell stuff. don't get a chance to converse about it much on here. the 1 thing different about that piece is the non working end is ground smooth all the way around. now I see what you mean by socketed... pretty sure I have at least a couple of those
