Holy HURRICANES.. but it was windy today! Looking at the National News reports I know that Kentucky didn't even get a hint of what the Folks along the gulf suffered with Hurricane IKE, I'll be including them all in my prayers again this evening. However, here in Central Kentucky we DID have one hell of a windy day! You know, a nice Summer or even Autumn breeze around here is welcomed most days. Most days a "nice breeze" would clock somewhere between 2 to 8 miles per hour. Today the "breeze" was constant averaging around 25 to 30 miles per hour. NO KIDDING! Lexington here even recorded gusts over 50 mph and one even topped out at 60 mph. Trees downed, power lines downed, even brick walls blowing over on parked vehicles. SHEESH! Of course I didn't hear about all this till this evening. I *DID* experience the unseasonably strong breezes this morning though. I finagled my way into another Sunday Morning Soccer Field Hunt. <grin>
With the promise of breakfast sandwiches, relaxing with the Sunday paper and fresh air and sunshine, I talked my wife into accompanying me to one of the soccer complexes that I like to detect. Bright and early this morning we loaded up the car and headed off to a nearby town and the now famed Soccer Complex... oh with making a pit stop at a nationally known fast food establishment for the afore mentioned breakfast fare. <man..whoever came up with the idea for a clown as their corporate representitave must have been on drugs>
At the Soccer complex, my wife and I secured a picnic table in one of the shelters at one end of the park. "Secured" being more than a relative figure of speech. That morning breeze was rather stiff. We kept snatching wrappers and napkins, even the bag as they were blown or being blown from the table even as we ate. I figured that after the sun got a little higher the breeze would die down, like it usually does.. but that was not to be the case, if anything, it got stiffer. Now at this park there is some major construction going on, at least has been, during the week. Well, not "construction" but earth works anyway. There is a very long ditch or culvert being excavated and graded along one side of the park.. for storm runoff or something I suppose, but whatever it's for, the work has left a lot of bare earth. All the dirt that was removed for the "ditch" has been moved to one end of the park where it's being spread out and graded to make more level surface. Now had it be wet around these parts lately, all that dirt would be MUD.. but it's been dry. VERY DRY.. so all that dirt is more like dusty sand. Well just GUESS which way the wind was blowing from this morning... OH Yeah! I swear, at a couple of moments this morning it looked almost something like a picture straight out of the Great Depression's "Dust Bowl" era. I felt as though I could use my detector more like a blind person uses their cane. But that was only when the wind was gusting exceptionally strongly. Dirt and dust clouding the air every now and then. The rest of the time it was just a rather strong but nice cool breeze. Of course it played hell with my wife and her trying to read the sunday paper. <giggle> She eventually gave up and set her purse and radio on the paper just to keep it from being blown away.
I, on the other hand, was rather preoccupied with my detecting. One Full Size playing field today, and it took nearly three hours to search it from one end to the other and side to side. Leaning into the wind and wobbling back and forth like a two legged metronome that kept falling down. Well, kneeling down anyway, to dig up targets. LOTS of targets! Lots of junk and trash on this particular field. SO much that I actually considered STOPPING and looking somewhere else a time or two. I dumped my finds bag at least once before I finished searching this field, because it was so full of can slaw. Surprisingly, even with all the slaw.. there were not too many pull tabs. Weird!
I found quite a bit of clad, again, though not as much as I've found on other playing fields in this park. Every penny is a target and Every target is a thrill. Nickles, Dimes and Quarters at slightly bigger thrills of course. <grin> So you can imagine that finding Dollar coins is even that much sweeter! Well I found one today. And she's a lady, even is she's a bit tarnished and dirty.

Pretty Suzy B! Always nice to see you! Looks as though she's been waiting to be rediscovered for some time now. Well I'm glad she was patient. Funny, a LOT of the coins I recover from this park have the same look, that reddish rusty patina, must be the soil conditions there. I know that it is especially hard on the zinc Memorial Cents.. they dissolve here, more so that at other places I've dug them up from the dirt. Forty Five of them today. Pennies that is, memorial cents..some of them pre zinc fortunately.
I found one UGLY ring near a goal post at one end of the field. What is it with goal posts? They seem to attract jewelry and coins. <shrug> Anyway, this one was UhhhhGLEEE! Not even silver or even plated.

At one end of the field there was that ring.. at the other end of the field, about 12 feet from the goal post I found a SILVER HORSESHOE! and a horse's head! YIKES! Ok, so it was a cute little pendant, but it IS silver! Sterling silver according to the stamp on the back. <grin> I actually did an abbreviated version of the chicken dance, but my wife just thought I'd lost my balance due to the wind. <laughing>

YEAH! Perhaps it's a LUCKY horseshoe after all.. at least for me.. I found it! <grin>
I found a lot of junk and trash, as I'd mentioned earlier, some of it wasn't can slaw though. I found pull tabs, of course, and a couple of trashed pairs of sunglasses, some cleat inserts, paper clips, a key (portion) and plastic stuff on the surface like the sharpie and the alphabet bead with the Letter E.

.... and there was the clad.. <smile> Or should I say.. the Vacation Fund contribution from my metal detecting hobby.

I only found a little over ten dollars today.. $10.25 actually.. but I'm not complaining. <smile> It's all good! And every target is a thrill, not just the ones with coins at the end of the recovery. And targets I had! I kept a count today.. I counted EVERY target that I dug. All told, including the can slaw, bottle caps, pull tabs, coins and other stuff, I dug 317 targets! ..with 7 surface finds (coins). Oh My Aching Back!... or it will be tomorrow I'm sure! But I had fun. My wife tolerated it.. but my cat missed me (us) being gone all morning and most of the afternoon. As I was sitting in my recliner watching the evening news she tried to get my attention again as she does occasionally, when she wants attention or wants to play. Inky, my cat, will come up beside my chair and paw at my shoulder while plaintively meowing for attention. "Daaaad.." <laughing> Tonight I caught it on film.. er.. digitally.
The approach...

... the appraisal.. (wondering what the heck that flash was about)..

... and finally.. the appeal.. (again..what the heck was that flash
AGH!!! MY EYES!!!)

note the paw on my shoulder. My cat is spoiled rotten.. and I'm WHIPPED! Cat whipped? not a "cat'o'nine tails" whipped.. but I'll not go the other route.. you all have minds in the gutter anyway. <laughing>
Ugh.. according to the news there are still thousands of people here in the Lexington area without electricity due to the power outages from wind damage. The governor has declared a state of emergency for several counties further west from where I live. Locally trees falling on powere lines, falling on cars.. with people in them! One lady in the hospital. Whew.. a LOT of wind today. Again though, not as bad as other parts of the country. Remember them in your prayers if you are so inclined. This weather will pass, and folks will be able to get back to their lives.. and pastimes.. like metal detecting maybe. <grin> as always..
Happy Hunting!
