My buddy found this at a garage sale for a buck. Solid brass and weighs about two pounds. He gave to me because the design looks similar to that found on gold rush buckles and on the back of coins we all like to find. :hello2:

Anyone ever see anything like this before?

Looks to be a relatively modern 'fantasy piece', possibly referencing the War of 1812 or some other war fought within the US. :icon_scratch:
It also looks to have been painted blue and was likely hung outside
at some point... what does the reverse side look like?

Cool find winslow, congrats!

I'm thinking organizational rather than official. I don't think it was intended to hang out in the weather
but may have wound up in a flooded basement, and that's why the backboard is split and devoid of finish.
I as well would like to see the back. I would think that if it would be a flag holder it would have more than
one attaching point. I'm thinking some kind of reunion organization like the GAR but more west coast
based. Association of retired US Cavalry?
