New to forum found this yesterday. Curious on your thoughts of when it is from. My facebook group thinks Revolution or 1812. Has anyone seen this one? Google image searching hasn't helped

Definitely not Rev War. Most likely 1810-1820 IMO. I believe that "rounded oval" shape cufflink is slightly later than the "pointed oval" shaped cufflink that was popular from about 1780 to 1810ish. I have only dug one with that shape and seen a few others, one of which had Andrew Jackson on it, which I why I think it is a later style. I admit, I don't have a lot of evidence to support my claim, but that eagle is not Rev War period.

That looks like a pretty old reference you dug up. Probably outdated information. That's a federal eagle on that cufflink from what I can tell and I'm pretty sure that didn't come into use until the late 1780s. Still a killer find that anyone would love to have.

Nice find! However, the text in your reference is incorrect. Com. McDonough lead the American schooners at Cumberland Head in the Battle of Plattsburgh (aka Battle of Lake Champlain) in 1814. Do you have any further provenance concerning your find?

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

That's how I read the text though, dates back to the revolution (probably towards the very end or soon after) , but seemed like it was more common with the war of 1812 specifically with the battle of Lake Champlain 1814. The reference has it listed as a button, seeing as there is no shank nor anything attached i'm curious if its even a cufflink, the size and shape said cufflink to me. If it is then I really need to pound out and search for the other side.

Mark Parker's column in Western and Eastern Treasures had a very similar one submitted to it back in January of 2004.

He gives a date range of 1790's through 1820's. Not exactly the same design, but being that many of these period cuff buttons were custom made for someone, some variation would be expected within the overall motif. At least that example has a fragment of the link which supports the idea that this more recent example is half of a linked cuff button.

I agree with the date range but the variations are manufacturing one's, ie. from different makers. I don't think these were individually 'custom' made.

Nice recovery, congrats.
