I photographed these from an old book my friend has
this is the kind of earth lodges the mandans and the grosventres lived in
I thought some of you would like to see this
these earth lodges are huge, the bigger ones could hold a meeting with 100 or more people in them

It's pretty neat seeing what the lodges and villages would look like. I have a few books that show Adena and Ft. Ancient villages (I'm in KY). Sometimes I stand in the middle of the field and imagine what the village looked like and how it could have been situated.

Those old publications have a wealth of information in them. Those pictures are also in the book titled Collections of the State Historical Society of North Dakota, Volume 1 By State Historical Society of North Dakota. The book was published in 1906. There's lots of interesting reading and pictures in this book! Including information on the Mandan women's dice game called "Sha-we"; the four stick game called "mami-dop", and things such as how they made bracelets from elk horn.

The book has tons of information about the more personal aspects too, such as the names of the survivors of the last smallpox epidemic.

The section on Indians starts on page 431 part V.

You might want to download the book, it's free!
