First Comple Point, ID Questions, And The Scourge That Is Limestone...

I have been trying to find time to post these pictures and add some thoughts. The painted pottery I found was just sample of many that lay within my current hunting zone. I spoke with a local mountain biker who told me that the area is well known locally for having painted and decorated pottery. Some of it is close to 50% intact.

Yesterday I discovered why my secret spot with the small stream of water heading to the pond was so cold. It is a natural spring coming out of the limestone. I thought that was very cool!! I also found my first point although I did have some help. It had been tied with some type of animal hair (???) and was worn decoratively so it was hard to miss. :headbang:

I have so many pictures left to take so I selected some tools or things I was told were tools. One is a bone straightener, I think. I am also including a mini-version of that same type of rock with what appears to be unnatural grooves and a shape top and bottom.

The other is a long, thin, and rounded hard rock that a friend thought was really was special. He said it was a sharpening stone of some kind. Any and all help is welcomed as always. It was nice to find a complete point, no matter if it had a sign on it saying "I am an arrowhead".

Finally I wanted to express my deeply rooted disdain for limestone. I have the most comprehensive limestone collection in the world!! I am FINALLY adjusting my eyes to notice its patterns and texture but... AAaahhhh!! (Insert explicative.) It reminds me of the Sirens from Greek mythology. Although once I realize that everything is limestone I think it will be much easier. Uniface wrote some wisdom on an earlier thread about not expecting to find anything and simply look for lines and edges in the rocks. No truer words have ever been spoken.

I am learning that and have been bringing back fewer but better specimens. Too bad I had to carry packs filled with limestone through dense hills and valleys to learn what he meant. Thanks again to everyone for their help!!!! :icon_thumright:

Looks like someone wore the point as a necklace or good luck charm. It looks like the nylon used to bale hay on it. You have a fun spot and hope it keeps producing for you.
Good luck Nigel !

I think the first three pieces you show are natural and not artifacts. The piece with the grooves in it is formed by a softer material eroding faster than the harder material and hence leaving what looks like grooves.

I also agree that the Arrowhead was probably someones necklace that they wore and they lost it while hunting the creek you were in.

So I yanked the arrowhead off a stranger's neck...?? Hey, after looking at so much limestone it was a knee jerk reaction!! Now I just need to lay and wait for more strangers who may have complete knives, full points and tangs, and possibly the infamous Waco Sinker. THEN I need to jump them. ;D ;D

I went back out yesterday. It is not a secret spot. It is in that band of Greenbelt that runs through Oak Hill with the canyons. They have built so many new offices that Google Earth does not even have an updated picture. For that matter if anyone would like to go hunting there just let me know. I could certainly use another set of eyes!! Here are some of the better flint pieces I have found this week at this location.

Thanks for everyone's help!!
