Just an idea, but is there anything, or anyway that we can encourage the younger generation (under 18) to actively join TNET and share their dicsoveries. I am sure that some of the younger generation do visit this site.

A while back a young gentleman joined, and was rudely attacked. This young man deserves an apology. Is there anyway to relate to him and his parents, and encourage him to continue in this hobby?

Is there some way that can be set up, whereby they may be identifyable? Let's say there is an identifyable icon or logo in their avatar so that we older ones can be more supporting.

hey Dennis
i was at work today and my superintendent asked me if that searcher 11 yr old ever came back
i felt bad and said "no not yet, maybe his folks saw what happened and told him no more"

Dennis i PM'd him the same day that he received those undesirable comments and apologized to him on behalf of the forum
i have given many artifacts to my friends children to get them interested in this hobby
i know you have a big heart from being your friend and i appreciate your thoughts

his screen handle was "thesearcher123"

steve

here is the message i sent him

""hello searcher and welcome to tnet
if you want to learn about artifacts this is a good place with a lot of knowledge
i want you to know that i am sorry that your thread got pounded on and derailed
i hope you understand that the people that posted some of the things just got carried away
i know them and they are good people
i hope you can find your first real arrow point or artifact soon, and when you do please post it so i can see it""

Most of the young kids are more interested in things like MTV (totally disgusting) or video games. If they were identified it could be good because some people would go easier on them and take the time to explain things. Or it could be a bad thing cause some people would disregard them and might be even harsher (some people just don't like kids and THINK they are all disrespectful and worthless). But I think it might be a good idea to try.

I know this may not exactly apply here but.. I'm a big football fan and one of my favorite football coaches of all time said " When you win you teach, and when you lose you learn".. That may not exactly fit here but it makes sense to me... If you are succesful at something and want it to be carried on then you have to share that knowledge and have the patience and understanding to do so.. It's easy to ridicule someone for not being as knowledgable as you but it's much better to be the kind of person who takes the time to share their knowledge... Just my thoughts...

I agree that most kids are too busy with their video games, and that is beacuse their parents are too busy to take time out and engage them in looking for artifacts or detecting. Thats where we grandparents can step in. I know for sure that when our (my wife and I) granddaughters are old enough, they are going to want to tag along with us in looking for artifacts. We are not going to make them, but we are going to share the excitement of finding an arrowhead or such. And as they grow older, set themselves up a site here on TNET, so that they can share that excitement.

I do not find a point every time I go out, and I don't expect my granddaughters to either. But the time that is spent out searching is the thrill of finding that point, adz, or thumbscraper. And if we don't find anything, we can always say that we got out, got some fresh air, and got some good excercise.

I'm 35 my kids are 14 an 17. My boy I the youngest and yes he does play video games an sometimes ill play with him. It's another way to spend time with him. But he's also the first one to say lets go hit the river or field. I take him as much as I can because sooner or later he will be too busy with girls. He kinda is all ready. He has found quite a few points himself. My daughter used to be my sidekick till she decided she didn't like hiking and beach combing anymore. I think ill get her back once she's a little older though.

Yeah once she gets a little older she will be right back out there with you. Just think at the ages your kids are it won't be long and they will be off on there own. Enjoy the time you have together.
