Error Nickel?

Hey guys I came across this while searching a box last week. Any ideas what the deal is with this coin, some type of error? The whole face being blank but still having an outline looks real cool.

I have a lifelong buddy that inherited his parents coin-op laundry ... 46 washers and 46 dryers. I find at least one of these a week in my rolled coin. Each week i get 100 rolls of nickels from the bank. I go through them in my down time. As a heads up . war nickels are bringing $44.00 a roll on ebay , a good profit on $2.00 of coins.

What strikes me (no pun intended) is the real lack of aggressive scratches that would result for sanding, scraping, grinding, etc. It's relatively smooth.
