Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I've been searching for some time and it suddenly occurred to me that the best ideas might come from some fellow treasure hunters. I'm 64 and still in reasonably good health and I want to keep it that way. I'm sick of the weather, the taxes, the politicians and the incredibly stupid laws they pass in this " nanny state ". In short, I'm sick of New York. I'd also like to expand my opportunities for Treasure hunting now that I have the time. I'd like to relocate down South in or near a small to mid size town, hopefully within a reasonable drive to the coast. I've done some coin shooting and some cache/relic hunting but I've never been able to do any beach hunting. I'm on social security, so finding some small part time job to supplement my income would be nice. I spent some time in South Carolina in my younger years and was impressed with their friendliness and their sense of their history and their culture, something sadly lacking up here. I'm really looking forward to getting out of here and any suggestions from any state down South would greatly be appreciated.

The mountainous areas in Southwest Virginia are beautiful, but these curvy roads and inclines/declines wear your tires and brakes out early. Winters are often far more treacherous than flat land roads. Power outages from tree limbs falling, and inattention by utilities to attend to these incidents in a timely manner have lead to at least one 10 day power outage during the Summer, and a 4 day outage last Winter.

But the people are wonderful, but everyone knows everyone's business - a negative.

Mid North Carolina is a beautiful area. I'd suggest that!

Good luck!

Can't wait for responses my family and I are truly sick of living in this regime .its considerably harder to leave with my home and job but we feel raising our children here would be doing them an injustice .

Thanks for the info Deepseeker. Southwest Virginia sounds a lot like the Adirondack Mountains where I am now except the winters are longer and colder here, most likely. I'll definitely be checking out North Carolina. I've never known which part of the state to check out. I see you're from upstate NY Joe Hunter... you know what I'm talking about. I wish you the best of luck and thank you both for your timely responses.

You know what they say…
"THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE "…… But it never is….

Hi amgrunt69; Think about an ideal spot here in Mass. Look at the area just East of Worcester in towns like Acton, Littleton etc. It's the Perfect location for you.Weather is very consistent all year round.Public Transportation is everywhere. Great Hospitals. Now about the detecting aspect of it. You would be living in the heart of detecting territory here. The Farm fields are to your left within 30 - 60 mins drive. Some are right in your town. Beaches are to your right. Lakes and swimming ponds are everywhere. You could become a member of my Club. The Mass Treasure Hunting Association and establish contacts with guys most likely living right next to you.YUP, Mass is a diggers dream. I've been hunting for 45 years and I'm still finding stuff. There is no shortage of sites here. That's the truth.. You want contact me via my email address at bronaye742@yahoo.com ok. I'll be glad to get you set up pronto. Only catch is that the people here speak the Old Kings English, Commoners Version. More commonly know as Bastuds English or Dirty English. We tend not to pronounce our R's and we use expressions that are VERY old. Don't worry though, we grow on yea.!! :icon_thumleft: We love our history and are passionate about our sports. Go Patriots. We celebrate each towns own history. Heck in some cases we even celebrate our neighborhoods own cultural histories. Ever hears of St. Patricks Day. That started in South Boston, SOUTHIE, Home of the Irish. Where I'm from.So if your looking for a place to come then here is the place for yea. Best Wishes.
To joe; The same is for you. Mass has some of the best schools at ALL levels in the ENTIRE Nation as well. Ever hear of Harvard, MIT, The Franklin Institute, Boston Architectural Center, Wentworth Institute. The list goes on. Check us out. Write me via my email address above. Also, we have tons oof jobs open here in all fields ok.
PEACE:RONB

you have grass over there too wow !!!

What would be nice is less gov/laws better education (or as we say in ny more betterer)warmer climate (more detecting)and less taxes.

You guys are great and I do appreciate the input.
Joe Hunter, Family and a job is the best way to make a new start and I wish you the best of luck. Let us know how you make out. I hope one of us escapes.
Austin, I've always had a keen interest in Texas, I really believe I'd enjoy the climate there, I love the heat. I've done some research, but the state is so damn BIG. Thanks for heading me in a direction. Joe Hunter also lived there and liked it, so there's two for Corpus Christi.
Jamey, Tennessee is another state that's been on my list. Any particular area ?
Barker, I can't thank you enough for the time you took in providing me with such extensive information. The thing is, I'm looking for a lot more warmth and as your fellow resident, says, the state might be just a little too " liberal " for me, especially as regards the gun Laws, which are just as bad if not worse here in New York. Aren't the rents a little pricey in Mass also? I will say that I am definitely a fan of the 'Southie " culture. They don't make neighborhoods like that any more. Neighborhoods were like that when I grew up.
Thanks for the heads up Red James Cash. Coming from a resident and a Wolf Pack member I'll take it to heart. I'd like to know more about the Wolf Pack. Feel free to PM me ,any of you guys.
Keppy, the older I get the more I believe in all those old adages, honestly . That said, I have to believe that the grass stays greener, longer , South of the Mason Dixon.
Again, thank you all for your input, it is really a big help.

If you like your guns amgrunt then you definitely wont like Mass.Even if youre fresh out of the military you have to take a firearms safety course in order to get a permit to buy and own one.You cant even own a guns magazine without a permit nor a single cartridge.Do you like youre July 4th fireworks, not in Mass. ,theyre against the law.You cant even have sparklers.Yup Mass is a haven for liberals.Stay away,Farrrrr away :laughing7: Im out of here myself ASAP.

BARKER- do you work for the state of Mass in some aspect? We have state taxes, toll road taxes that were supposed to go away, but didn't! I do believe we are more of a nanny state than NY!
People are moving out of here!

Don't dare try defending yourself if mugged, you'll end up on the wrong end of the law!
You can't own a gun unless you have PD blessings!
