Escape from New York

Roger That, Red James. Wow I knew it was bad, but I didn't know it was that bad!! Thanks for the further info. Best of luck on your Escape.

Hello SC Diggin. I visited Myrtle Beach many times in my younger years. Haven't been South in at least 20. That's where I really began to think of moving there . The friendliness, the culture, and the GRITS !!!! It will surely be my first stop, any particular area you could suggest ? And thanks for the offer, that's what I'm talking about !!!

Hey Austin, thanks for the invite ! The hardest part of relocating is not knowing anyone or having any 'real " knowledge of where to go. My road trip will probably begin towards the end of January, getting things in order now. Austin looks like a good location, close to everything. Thanks for opening your door to a Yankee!!

Hi Jamey. Knowing where not to go is more important than knowing where to go. I guess Brentwood is out, I'm more of a woodchuck. Looks like Murfressboro and Franklin will be my Tennessee destinations. I can't thank you enough, I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner.

My cousin lives in Asheville North Carolina and loves it there

Hey! I am in the upstate. I would suggest the middle of the state or lowcountry. I want to move down there one day but haven't been able to yet. Myrtle Beach would be a great place for beach hunting!

Its even worse than I can say amgrunt lol.If you want to carry your boyscout pocket knife, nope, against the law.Pockets knifes are only legal if the blade length is 1 1/2 inches or under.

Life in the land of the free…….I left NY for the "south" and have no regrets……...

Hello Listfisher. The area around Ashville certainly is some gorgeous country. It looks like the real estate and rentals have gotten pretty pricey these days because it is so nice there. I'm not sure I could afford it. It's one area I do keep my eye on though. I'd kind of like to be a little closer to the coast too. Never done any beach hunting. Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

Hello SCDigginWithAK . Honest to God, Myrtle Beach is the first area I gravitate towards, I have such fond memories of the place. I think it would have to be one of the small towns surrounding it though. I google mapped it and I can't believe how much development has gone on down there. Looks pretty crowded and congested. Seems it would be great for beach hunting and of course you've got plenty of places for relic hunting I would imagine. That's the first area I plan on visiting. Thanks again !

Hey there Red James. Geez, the last I looked even here in NY we're allowed a 4 inch blade. You were right , out of the frying pan into the fire. Hard to believe isn't it, in the state where the American Revolution got it's start with The Boston Massacre. Looks like you need to escape more than I do. Thanks again.

Hello doc-d. I've heard that story many times from many people. A lot of them from NY. Your endorsement reinforces my determination to get down there. Many thanks.

If you dont mind the cold amgrunt,New Hampshire white mountains.Houses are dirt cheap.30 grand will easily buy you a 3 bedroom house.I have even seen a 4 unit apartment building go for $9900.But as you stated you want to get away from the crap weather. The gun laws basically make up for the crap weather.Walk into a gunshop, show your NH drivers license and walk out with what you wanted.

Yes indeed. Maybe look in any places in Horry, Georgetown, Beaufort, or Jasper Counties. All are on the coast and are pleasant counties. Good luck! If you need ANY help let me know!

hi Red James. I never gave much thought to the " Live Free or Die " state. I knew the gun laws were good but I had no idea the property was so cheap. I could probably handle the cold, I've lived in the Catskills and Adirondacks for the last ten years but there's not a lot of coastline either. I believe the gun laws in most of the southern states are reasonable and certainly a lot better than Mass and NY. All in all, I think I'd rather be warm. Getting old I guess. Thanks for the help. Jim

Hi SCDiggens. AHH, Beaufort, I'd love to visit my Alma Mater again, Parris Island. This time I'd be able to leave whenever I wanted. Thanks for the heads up on the surrounding areas. It's nice to know that they're pleasant and hear it from real people who live there and know. I'll give you a heads up when I head down though it'll be at least a month. Thanks again. Jim

brentwood tn is super nice if your a yuppie, smyrna tn is a good place to retire, murfressboro is full of civil war artifacts, most of the time right in your yard, franklin is awesome,id stay out of nashville though but ok to visit.thats all middle tenn,i do not no much about west tn or east tn.west tn is gattlinburg and it is really nice, dollywood.lots of music stars just living like everyone else,my son has a friend whos dad was the drummer for boston a founding member.i really like watertown thats the place
There are regular folks in Brentwood too Jamey( yes a lot of yuppies too I'll admit) but a lot of people come for their excellent schools and the wide roads and less crowded suburban living.Franklin Tennessee is closeby and a beautiful small town, cost of living in the downtown area is sky high though.Murfreesboro is nice too,use to be a small college town but it's growing rapidly .I will add too in seeing Bandit's post below that we have all the glorious seasons here too.I don't like cold weather but not sure I would be totally happy with hot weather all the time either.

Having made almost exactly the same decision myself 2 years ago here is why I came from New Hampshire to North East Tennessee. #1 cost of living. My property taxes in NH were 5k a year. Here in rural Tennessee they are $385 for a nice house with a brand new 30x40 garage on an acre of land. Gas is currently just under $3 a gallon in most places. #2 weather. We looked at this area on the recommendation of some close friends who moved here from CT 5 years ago. He was a weatherman for a good part of his life beginning in the 60s when he was a weatherman for the military on the Oriskany during Vietnam. When he retired he researched the weather patterns for the entire country and found that here close to the Western side of the Appalachians we are in a bit of a sweet spot where there is very little bad weather. Those of us who have moved here are called "tweeners" by the locals because we either came here from the North to escape the bitter cold and large amounts of snow or from the deep South to escape the Summer heat & humidity. Pretty unique area here. The first Summer we were here we had them over for a cookout and he asked me if I noticed anything "different". Not really sure what he meant I asked. "no annoying little bugs" he said.. No mosquitoes, no black flies, none of that stuff that I remember from living in New England all my life. The Summer temps here close to the mountains are no hotter than New England most days but the Winters are very mild. I think last year we had maybe 2 days that never got above freezing all day and a couple of minor snow events that were melted & gone in a day or 2. One of my other hobbies is messing with hot rods & muscle cars and this area is a paradise for those type of events as well. Coming here was the best thing I ever did. But... with all of that said, if you don't leave your NY ways behind you probably won't be happy here. Come here because you WANT a change, not to change they way they do things here. Other stuff that may or may not be of interest to you but was to me... I'm an old racer and used to build & own dirt track & asphalt track racecars. We are in the heart of racing country here with several great tracks within a couple hours drive. Also the area is very friendly to the Second Amendment and TN is not likely to change that in my lifetime. Motorcyclist ? Best riding in the country. Check out the Tail of the Dragon or the Rattler for examples. TN was recently voted the best place in the country to retire to by the media. These things may not matter to you but it's worth mentioning. All the best wherever you land.

No problem Jim:icon_thumright:The prices are only cheap up in the mountains.Southern NH prices are just as bad as every where else. The best I've seen was a 10 acre plot of land, half cleared half wooded,8 thousand dollars.I called my brother and told him about it,he lives up there,he called but it was already gone,it didnt last long.If youre curious check NH real estate on craigslist,Berlin,Gorham,Jefferson,Milton,Randolph area.

I did forget to mention in my last post. I would advise staying away from Charleston. I believe the land tax is high.i may be wrong though
