Escape from New York

No problem Jim:icon_thumright:The prices are only cheap up in the mountains.Southern NH prices are just as bad as every where else. The best I've seen was a 10 acre plot of land, half cleared half wooded,8 thousand dollars.I called my brother and told him about it,he lives up there,he called but it was already gone,it didnt last long.If youre curious check NH real estate on craigslist,Berlin,Gorham,Jefferson,Milton,Randolph area.
I lived in NH for 54 years. Stick a fork in it. It's done. Change the name to "Northern Massachusetts" and call it a day. Prices are cheap in the mountains because the weather sucks and there's no jobs. My step son lives and works in North Woodstock. He can't wait to get out of there.

I did forget to mention in my last post. I would advise staying away from Charleston. I believe the land tax is high.i may be wrong though

You would be correct. I had a friend that moved from the Charlotte,NC area to Johns Island near Folly Beach because the property taxes in Charleston were so ridiculous.

Its always good to have a back up place:wink:

Hey buddy wheres woodstock in relation to berlin?

You know, if the folks who recognize there is a problem in Upstate NY keep taking the cowards' solution and running we'll never fix the problem. I'm entrenched and dug in for the duration. Have lived in this general spot all my life and won't be chased off without a good fight.

Moving "a little further West" didn't work for the Mohicans, the Susquenanok or the Delawares. Sometimes it's better to hold your ground.

Probably another reason you want to stay away from charleston. Hahahahahaha it was on the local news today!

Hi Red James. I would like to get away from the cold. In order to buy another house now, I would need another job and I'd kind of like to avoid that. The cheap real estate intrigues me though and I do spend a lot of time checking out houses and cars for sale. I'll check them out. Thanks again. Jim

Thanks a lot NHBandit, I appreciate the heads up. Like I just told Red James, to buy a place I would need a job and apparently there aren't any. It's about 5 degrees here right now in the lower Adirondacks . I'm really thinking SOUTH.

Hello CoilyGirl. I've been generally thinking N and S Carolina, Tennessee area but that's a big area. It's nice to be able to zero in on particular places to check out and places to avoid. I thank you for your input.

Hello Charlie P. While I appreciate your sentiments, it's not about being " chased off ", it's about quality of life. I too, have lived here all my life and I am REALLY dug in. That's part of my problem. The problems in NY are not going to be solved in my lifetime, probably, never. That's all I can say without getting in to politics. Aside from the weather, We are the most heavily taxed state in the country. The weather sucks, It's more expensive to live here and I'll go out on a limb and say that there are probably a lot more opportunities to pursue our hobby , treasure hunting, I'd like to enjoy the last years of my life, not be unhappy in the " Vampire State"
I do appreciate your input and I'm glad that you're happy here.

NHBandit, I really appreciate the effort you made in your detailed report. That's exactly what I'm looking for as to weather, "the sweet spot". The taxes sound great too, I was paying 3200 for an average house and an acre, and that was ten years ago.. You also reminded me of something else I hate about up here. The bugs !!!! Black flies, deer flies, gnats , all summer long. I like a change of seasons, but up here you're burning wood from mid to late September to mid to late March at the very least. If not, you're burning oil or gas, More expense or 4-5 cord of wood. As for "new York Ways, I've been a " woodchuck " most of my life. Most of the really rural upstate New Yorkers don't have your typical New York ways. I'm not looking to change anyone or anything. I dig old cars too. Back in the 60's and 70's My father ran a body shop and we were both restoring cars. He the 20- 50's, me the 50-60's, mostly muscle cars. If I had them now , I'd be rich, but I changed cars like socks. I'm heartened by your enthusiasm for the area and that you've had no regrets. Second Amendment friendly, it's really looking like NE Tennessee will be the first stop on my trip south. Thanks so much for the detailed information. Jim

Funny Story SCDiggen. If that happened up here, they would probably enact a law banning ceramic squirrels. I can see it now. Ceramic squirrels don't kill people. Squirrelly people with ceramic squirrels kill people.

Would if I could RJC, all the family is here.
I don't like having to think before I defend myself!

Sounds about as squirrelly as what goes on in Mass.

Forgot to mention our AKA: Taxachuetts!

I'd like to reccommend my city Charlotte,N.C. I'd like to but I can't - it's becoming a nanny state also - not the place I grew up in in the fifties at all and taxes keep climbing. Take a look at Beaufort S.C. It would meet a lot of you needs;
small town
very mild climate,
very close to the coast,
lower SC taxes,
gun laws that you can live with,
and a lot of history in and around the area.
There will be bugs!!
I'd probably move there myself but the wife ain't going nowhere till the grandkids are grown.
Good luck on your search!

I am from upstate ny 43 and disabled firefighter......I am going south as soon as my children graduate high-school. Only 7.5 years left. I am looking into southern NC about am hour or so from the ocean.

I have driven over 300,000 miles since we retired in 1997. Not all over the country, but over quite a large area.

By far the friendliest two towns we encountered were Gadsden, Alabama, and Sweetwater, Texas.

We needed a place to stay one night when returning from visiting our son, and pulled into Gadsden. We stopped at a fast food place, the staff was multi-ethnic. As is our marriage (Mexican and American) so this is important to us. The staff greeted us as if we were old friends who had been gone for a few years and came back. We felt as if we were in the Twilight Zone.

Another time we stopped in the north end of Gadsden, and had the same feeling.

Ditto for Sweetwater. We were driving from Amarillo to McAllen, and night came as we approached Sweetwater. We like to walk out our kinks at the end of the day, and asked at the Motel-6 on the Interstate if it were safe to go for a walk. They told us, as if surprised by the question, yes, any time of day or night.

Likewise we greeted happy people of the various multi-ethnic type, and all had warm smiles for us.

I realize you had other needs than friendly, but I felt so strongly about these two that I had to post this. If for unknown reasons, I had to leave Mexico, I would be looking at those two places. There are many happy people in McAllen, but I have never bonded to the community for a variety of reasons even though we keep a mobile home there and have a grandson there.

I bailed out of California a few years ago for the same reasons.
North Carolina is worth taking a look at and South Carolina has some great spots too.

Just steer clear of Cary N.C. as it is considered "the Containment Area for Relocated Yankees"
( nice area just a little pricey)

Ive been sick of new york for some time as well. Seams like its in a downward spiral!

Interesting discussion. I, too, have been considering moving out of the "Vampire State"(love that). I originally planned on going to Pennsylvania, which is close by, but taxes there are beginning to skyrocket, as I have seen on the news. My wife and I have discussed Georgia--haven't seen anyone mention that in this thread. Anybody have any info to offer on Georgia?( She hates Florida, but we are beginning to have difficulty dealing with cold weather).
