Ever Had a Bad Experience With a USED Detector?

Re: Ever Been Screwed On a USED Detector?

I actually have had good luck with used so far. I had bought a used MXT that performed well. I also bout a used Minelab Excal 1000 that I currently use from ebay and have had excellent luck with that. I am sure the lemons are out there. I see some people buying used for a few bucks less than new, which I do not understand. I will pay a little extra to get the warranty and support my "LOCAL" shops. My local shops are fro 45 minutes away to 1 1/2 hours away. I feel its worth the trip and relationships you build with these dealers.

Re: Ever Been Screwed On a USED Detector?

I've bought 3 used so far and with the exception of a stiff knob on one, they all worked like new.

Re: Ever Been Screwed On a USED Detector?

There are a lot of honest people out there as well as a few crooked ones I have never bought a used detector and to be honest and say I would have to try it out before buying. Lee

No just on a regular bed and once in a '56 Chevy. M :-[ nty

Re: Ever Been Screwed On a USED Detector?

Now there's a perfect example of why you should not buy a used machine without the instruction manual.

That is a close range locating device for a professional dooser.

It's gonna be difficult to get the instructions.

Chances are, though, you may find crud, zip, and nada.

No need to post pics of your finds. Keep 'em secret.

Re: Ever Been Screwed On a USED Detector?

Maybe I told you more than you wanted to know? Honesty isn't always the best policy I guess? Actually I've traded with two members of the forum and got just what was promised, and very happy with the deals. As far as I know the traders were happy also. If not I would try to make it right if I could. I'd be careful about a deal that sounds too good to be true because it probably is. Also I've seen a few fabulous deals with members that only had like 4 or 5 posts and that would make me a bit leery. I put one used detector up for sale a year or so ago and got a hit from a new member that wanted me to cash a large money order and send them the change. Scam alarm went off immediately and I pulled the plug on that deal and reported it. The scammer mysteriously disappeared. Monty

Re: Ever Been Screwed On a USED Detector?

I bought my Minelab Musketeer II used and I made out fine. Everything was as described and it came with two coils with covers, the shoulder pack/weather cover and a AA battery tray as well as the NiMH pack and charger.

Like anything else, used equipment is always a risk. Some guys treat gear well and others are hard on it . . . and some folks are just slippery weasels.

Re: Ever Been Screwed On a USED Detector?

Well Badger,

Since you're so easy to get along with,
I've got a couple machines here that I never put batteries in.

Wanna buy 'em?

;D

Re: Ever Been Screwed On a USED Detector?

Badger, is that a Toilet Seat on the bottom of that detector you bought? :tard:

It's hard to believe they're still pulling this scam. But some people are unbelievably gullible.

I've gotten a couple bad machines from forum members but said nothing. One I sold to a fellow who didn't care (he took it AS IS) and I only lost maybe $50 (about a $500 machine). The other needed fixing which only cost the postage back to the company (maybe $20).

It seems nobody else here has had any problems so I must just be lucky this way :tard:

Badger

Badger,

I lost count how many unfixable, useless detectors I have got over the years. Some were sold as -is, some were offered as a working detector. Some were scams, some were just honest mistakes by the seller. I don't get up tight about it, all part of the game. If you want to play you got to be willing to pay! (I have got some that were killer deals!)
I know you still got frozen ground up there but how is your air testing coming along with that F70? Joe

Re: Ever Been Screwed On a USED Detector?

Badger the F75 might be the one to watch out for in the used good deal department
Unless you know and trust the seller. The F75 did have operator but also had some
factory defects Like the old story of the guy that bought a new Chevell SS with 454ci 500 HP
then sold it because he was afraid of it That's the one you want.

Re: Ever Been Screwed On a USED Detector?

Badger, I have bought and sold many detectors over the years and when I sell a detector, I do something no person has ever done for me. I will refund the money if what I am selling is not as described cosmetically or functionally. I have bought many detectors that are described as "mint" when they are actually "B" condition. Mint to me means 9.0 to 9.5. In over 75 transactions, I have had rechargeable batteries that would not hold a charge twice. Bad rods twice. Coils that look like somebody used an angle grinder on the cover four times. Now, for the good. Many times a person under describes their detector and I am pleasantly surprised. I have never been sold a detector that does not work. I have had one person complain about my rating and I gave that person the option of a complete refund or a partial reimbursment. If you hang around the forums long enough, the guys who buy and trade alot are recognized and you will not be disappointed with your purchase from them. These forums give people like you and me a chance to try many different detectors. After many years, I am at a point where I am totally happy with the detectors I have. It has been a long journey, but it has been fun and that's what this hobby is all about. R.L.

Re: Ever Been Taken On a USED Detector?

no money orders senor only 1800s silver pesos for badge making

99.9% of sellers are pretty honest

There may be minor differences of opinion on how to grade them cosmetically, but everything I bought has worked, though maybe not quite perfectly on a new model that had some bugs. Generally, when a seller isn't sure if it's up to factory specs, they will at least sell it at a huge discount.

One thing to keep in mind is repair costs. Keith Wills www.brokendetector.com says his average bill is $100. So if you save $200+ on used detector, it might be worth the gamble.

The most I got cheated on was a new detector a "Seben Extreme". It's not even a motion detector & disc is ferrous/non-ferrous only & ground balance ran out of range, etc.

The MPX detector from Kellyco did not work good in my soil. To be able to get a beep every time on a coin planted 3" deep, it had to be swung at 8 feet per second. Then the dime IDed as half dollar, which is detector's ID when signal is too weak to tell what it is. Got refund less shipping. HH, George (MN)

Re: Ever Been Taken On a USED Detector?

4 years ago I bought an ID Excel only a month old. It worked well for about 6 hours and then started going crazy. I sent it to fisher and because I did not buy it new I had to pay for a new coil plus shipping both ways. This machine only had a couple of hours on it when I bought it.IT did not even have a scratch on the coil. I liked it but I traded it off as soon as I got it back from the company. The ID excel was full of bugs when they first came out and I got burned because of it. I am sure they have worked the bugs out by now but I lost my shorts on that one. I had a CZ 5 that I could not kill. That detector was a real work horse. In the last 5 years I have bought 2 new detectors and three used and the ID excel was the only one to give me any problems but it worked fine for about 6 hours so it was not the sellers fault ,just a factory defect. That is one reason that I switched brands. The factory service. I talked to fisher on the phone when they had my machine and they could care less that the machine was pretty much new ,because I bought it used they would not budge at all . Not even a military discount.
