Went yesterday to take back all my halves and dimes at my other bank, they have one of those nice coin counters. Well I get there early and the girl says She got my two boxes of halves in so I trade in my change and pickem up and head out. I get about half way home and think of what you guys (and gals} say about seeing a Walker or Franklin lookin back at you. I am in heavy traffic so after a few attempts I get the top box open and look at it. Kinda looks funny. Damn all tails lookin up. Then I notice the wrapper looks funny, pull one out and its been opened and has masking tape on it. Both boxes had already been searched, didnt even wait to get home before I called the bank and told the teller that if someone wants to do that they work there so they can order their OWN halves. I was pissed. The previoous boxes (4) had nothing at all in them. She said they sometimes come that way from the Fed. Res. I told her no they dont. The Fed damn sure dont tape rolls together with masking tape. What REALLY made me mad was what was wrote inside one of the boxes.." Bills Pawn Shop" and a phone number. I am mad again thinking about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have gotten hundreds of boxes of coins (though most were pennies and nickels) and have never paid a fee. Every time they say they'll charge me a fee, I say "Forget it, its not that important". I have also had a few banks say "We normally charge a fee, but I waived it 'just for today'" which is fine by me.

A couple of years ago at one bank I was told there was $0.07 per roll fee which would be $3.50 a box. Of course that was when I was just getting back into CRHing after a long layover, so I was just getting a few rolls at a time so it wouldn't be an issue. Eventually I learned that it appears to vary significantly branch to branch. While most branches don't even mention fees, I have a couple of branches that will only sell me a few rolls without a fee, and a couple that only tried to charge me a fee for half dollars (the box of pennies I got at the same time was not an issue).

I have tried to call ahead at different times to different banks and every time I do, they have tried to charge a fee. At which point I took a pass. At these same banks I have walked in and picked up numerous boxes without a fee. Of course frequently when I stop by near closing time to buy boxes they tell to call ahead so they will be available.

As far as returns go:
All the banks around here have coin machines (though a few won't accept half dollars) and many of them are self serve coin machines (which keep the tellers workload way down), so returning coins has never been much of an issue.

I would ask for some kind of literature showing how much they charge for coin. See what it says.... if it says they charge for rolls. Tell them Its ok because you need a drop off bank anyway. (I got them to drop the "fee" at a few banks just saying that) If they charge for return of coin they are a bad bank. If you do buisness with them I would stop and make sure you tell them that and that you are going to tell others. Try to do this without being rude too... if thats possible.

I have only been doing this for a few weeks now and have never been charged for any ordered boxes or the numerous returns. I seem to lean more on one specific bank for the dumps and what I have done the last two times I went is bring them donuts in the morning with my dumps. The tellers seem to appreciate it and we joke and laugh about the coin hobby. I am afraid to wear out my welcome so to speak. I really need to start dumping in several banks.

I try to get on friendly terms with all of the tellers at the several banks I do most of my business with. So far all have been very friendly and many ask what I do with the coins which surprises me actually. I just figured they knew what I was doing but I am new to this so maybe they don't. Who knows.

I am totally lost with this post.Maybe I just have the worst banks near me or the worst tellers in the country, but when you guys are saying you tell them you will bring all your rejects to their bank or all 4 boxes a week to deposit as a "threat" I would figure they would tell you right then about the charges to deposit coin.

I tried this with the bank that wouldn't order for me anymore unless I paid $5 per box and paid for all the boxes I had already gotten for "free" because as they told me no customers get coin for "free" everyone pay's the fee.

Well when I brought back a bunch of rolls to deposit there they told they would charge me for every roll I brought in or per box if I chose to do it that way.So I can't even use them for a dump bank either.
I have never heard of a "fee" for depositing coin.Do you have an account at this bank? Anyone else ever been charged a fee for depositing coin? ???

None for me, but I use a credit union.

I am a member of a credit union when I worked for the DOJ, but too small and asking them to order halves was like getting them to give up their first born. Why do you want them?? what are you doing with them?? why just these types?? why four boxes???....nevermind... went and opened an account elsewhere.

I have been reading your posts. YOur doing great and congrats!!!!!! I have been doing this about a month and seem to have better luck doing what you do, just going to differant banks. My regular bank really only complained once, when I came in at their "peak time" for business, the lady said for me to come in early in the morning, and said it didnt matter how much coin I had.

Oh I have met way more nice tellers than nastie ones. I also have a pretty darn good collection of vinyl money bags with the banks logo as well as some of the plastic stackable racks that holds rolls of coins. Many banks will order me as many boxes as I want and I have even ordered boxes from a number of banks that I dont even have an account at.

Searcher

Same here, several bags and the vinyl ones too, even got one from the "First Hawaiian Bank" . Most of the bakers are very polite, its just sometimes you get the ones that first thing out of their mouth is "You got an account here"? Had one ask that and when I said No she stated "well no account you need to leave then". ( Inwood bank )

noebody,

I live in Dallas too - ive gotten 15ish boxes over the past 3 months. All searched just like you said. I would be happy you got some that didnt seem to be to start off - most of the ones in our area area obviously checked by someone at the fed.

I have four more boxes ordered from two different banks that should be in wed. or thurs. Dont know whats going on, but like I said earlier I seem to do better taking a day off from the shop and driving around asking banks if they have any.I have been screwed every time I have "ordered" halves.

I have never paid a fee. But I have 2 teenagers more than willing to carry around pocket full of rolls. There fore my wife has NO problem taking them before they get them.... Btw this is my spending money so they do fight over it...

And I keep rolls in the car to buy gas and others

(I musta got excited to. cause IM only on a 2 box a check habit (1 a week)) My bust..

What I want to know is how ya so dam lucky, Ive never been skunked but I only come out with one or 2 a box at 40% and hardly any 90%...Send some my way
